Hey guys! Sorry again for this super novice question. I just want to ask what is the difference between having a www. and not having www. in a website URL?

http://www.example.com and http://example.com - What is the difference between them.

Thanks guys!

One is longer while one is shorter, one has www, while the other doesn't.

eg.
  1. www.freelancer.com
  2. freelancer.com

It has no benefit/disadvantage to search ranking visibility.

How true is the URL redirect rumor in terms of SEO and better ranking?

Example being:
http://www.freelancer.com being redirected to only http://freelancer.com or vice versa?

It's false, there is no "better ranking" just because you have a permanent redirect in place.

What the redirect does is to ensure that external links all pass "value" to the same URL set rather than potentially being split between two sets.
Whether this helps "ranking" or not is dependant on if the links have any "value" to pass in the first place.

I mean what's the difference between them technically? I know one is shorter and the other is longer.

But technically, what's the difference between them?

Being split in two sets can't be good though?

The technical difference is that one says "world wide web" in front of it, where the other doesn't. It's obsolete.

The 'www' is a subdomain of example.tld other and has become the "accepted" norm.

That all depends on whether the "www" sub delivers the same content as "example.tld" does.

I was just wondering about it because when I checked the number of backlinks of my site, I tried not to put 'www' and the results were different when I included 'www' on my domain name.

What's the meaning of that?

It means you have different numbers of links to the different versions, not that counting links is remotely useful.
