Sure a link, is a link, is a link!
BUT! To paraphrase George Orwell (Animal Farm)
"All links are created equal, but some links are more equal than others" and the usual "quality advice" of spamming forums for signatures, article dumping, and submitting to as many crappy directories isn't the way to get the links that are "more equal"
The ones who dole out such "sage wisdom" probably haven't had an original thought in their entire lives, but spend their time syphoning up misinformation from the 1990's and passing it along as current.
They also manage to miss the good information from the same era because they are so indoctrinated into the blinkered world of "SEO is link building" and "link building is SEO" mindset they consider that anyone or anything that goes against that must be wrong.
They lack the ability to challenge what they have read or have been told by their "seniors", but simply accept it blindly, when all around are examples of that advice being wrong or at least supect as to it's validity.

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds
Thought for today:- Is SEO the only industry where all the cowboys are Indians?
