I have found that I get backlinks from advertising.org if I tweet about anything with #advertising. I'm figuring they capture all tweets aimed at advertising and save them =)

Social media links do work very well, however for the best result the social profiles need to be active and genuine with consistent activity. I hear alot of people talking about page rank, and that a no-followed link that pass page rank. Well that maybe the case, but page rank is not the algorithm that drives ranking results... Google's search algorithm very likely takes page rank into account, especially when assessing the quality of a particular page, that one maybe ranking too, but because it's no-follow it doesn't mean the link is no good. Forget about page rank... the goal isnt get as many high page rank sites linking to you.. it's to move up the search results.. PR is a bloody waist of time

Ya off course social links help for getting optimum page rank from search engine. Eg. Facebook and twitter are the most favorite social media links.

Social links are no follow, they do not transfer any "juice" but unique visitors are good. It is advertising that can possibly help you optimize. I only see it as beneficial if you are reaching your target audience and converting some of them.

These things all seem to be pieces of the bigger picture.

Today, social media is a powerful way to get traffic because they have lots of traffic like G+, Facebook and Twitter and you can drive your target traffic to your website. It is true that it is not optimization but why we optimize our website, only and only for traffic which we can get from those sites. So in simple words these links are beneficial.
