duplication of website content

Hi,

I am in the process of getting a website duplicated. The website contains information that is very specific to the products that are advertised. The website is a .com and the new one will be .com.au. The original is done on a .net platform and the new one is on wordpress.

These 2 sites operate in different countries.

My question is - will google understand that we are the same company operating in different countries, selling the same product to different clientele. Also will our rankings be affected if all content is cloned for the new site?

And???

Google will show the best page for their users queries. What you see as "rankings" has absolutely no bearing on what others may see.

I am very new to this.

What i really need to understand is weather or not my australian site will comflict with the US site. Will google frown upon the duplication of content and therefor punish us for doing so?

If the content is best resulted for people in the US, then the US results will show up first. Vice versa.

This will be the most likely outcome.

There are no "duplicate content penalties"

Are you sure? I've read before that duplicating, or stealing someones content can do no good for your site.

Consider creating a new, useful service that no other site offers. You
could also write an original piece of research, break an exciting
news story, or leverage your unique user base. Other sites may
lack the resources or expertise to do these things.

Although stealing content is another thing altogether.

Nope it never was a concern.

A few years ago, well before the development of "canonical" meta elements and the furor about "permanent redirects", Google's advice was;

"Let us crawl it and our indexer will sort it out, but it you have a preference for which URI you want shown, redirect the others to it".
