I am a beginner in SEO. My site is currently PR 2 in a highly competitive niche.

To get there it took time and effort on my part as I was unwilling to pay someone else to do it for me and also I am a firm believer that I would benefit from it.

Anyway, I was wondering how companies that are hired by people to do the SEO for them actually work??

Most of them promise their clients backlinks, submission of short articles etc...

I know the difficulties I had getting links so how to these 'companies' do it? Do they just regularly spam their clients URL?

The two companies I've been following I know for a fact are legitimate and work so don't say that they are all fake.

They are NOT SEOs, just low quality "link builders"

They analyse the site (not using stupid and pointless online "tools" either), analyse the marketplace, and come up with a plan of useful things to do.
Which should not include spamming forums and blogs or writing pointless "articles" and "submitting them"

Do it yourself and FORGET ABOUT USELESS PR! Most of the info out there is garbage, and so are most of the "self-proclaimed SEO companies".

Follow Google's recommendations and you'll do fine.

Agreed! You'll have much better results if you do the SEO yourself. You need to put in the time and effort.

If you know SEO do it yourself and if not hire a reliable freelancer to do it for you and beware of Black hat SEO.

Guess everything was answered already.
