I've been looking around some job sites, came across some jobs that offer 38k for seo but you need a degree in mathematics, but why would you need a degree in mathematics?

I've being doing seo for a while everyone who has a website(s) usually does some sort of seo "url's keywords, trends, links, content etc"

Unless they are thinking about analyzing the algorithms.....

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe they want you to "figure out Google". Odd.

It's probably to analyze the data. What an SEO does now goes a long way past things like keywords and links. The respectable firms in the industry look at it more holistically from increasing traffic to improving conversions and everything in between.

Some of that is analyze the data collected by analytics programs or through internal tools. A company might want you to run all sorts of statistical analysis on different numbers.

Most of what people think is all of seo is now more a subset of what an SEO firm might do.

I see where analysing your keywords can be helpful but that only goes so far, say your a business site and your getting traffic based on keywords that have no relation then its a waste of time, then there is trends unless your able to match the trends as they happen with products that suit, no point.

Any body can do a chart so a degree in mathematics for charts or simply analysing, to me does not fit in with the fast paced trends of today.

The site was selling a €499 pdf viewer for web / mobile and internet tablets but what could they analysing for that? latest products coming out on the market? because even that is nothing that a Google search can't sort or insider information.

Then you have more problems than whether or not you have a degree in mathematics.

Analyzing data isn't necessarily about keywords. It's about talking all the things you can measure and putting it into context so it can lead to actionable tasks to improve your business. Understanding and manipulating all those numbers is the realm of mathematics.

Not only that (sorry to diss on this very website) but they hire people from sites like this who barely speak english and expect them to preform optimization on their website. I've seen more bad experiences with the garbage services offered by cheap outsourcers than I have quality.

I have a degree in mathematics. And do SEO.

It's funny enough that I encountered this thread today, as it was last night that I thought about relation of SEO and maths.

A had a new SEO job offer, and was studying 3-years GA stats to get the broad picture and make a draft of an SEO plan for my prospect client. Add GWT report here. Add seo spyglass running 24 hours non-stop to analyze competition.

When crunching those data I thought one should have a math major to enjoy that the way I do. It works for me that way, and I'm no great mathematician.

You need really basic mathematical skills to do SEO, so don't get overwhelmed. I believe it's nonsense to demand a degree in maths for SEO job.

The degree certainly isn't necessary, but it's not hard to see why some companies would ask for it or how it could be helpful. Even if it's just the enjoyment factor it could lead to someone doing better work.
