Which gives best results - thousands of links from any website in any field or a much smaller amount of links purely from related sites? I tend to go a bit mad with link trading and i get good results, whats your view?

I "Think" you get better results from related sites, as depending on your search results, you could search for football and end up getting a totaly unrelated site! For google, this is not acceptable!

That is why google rates your site on quality and not quantity.

Depends on how you define success,

If you are only interested in Google and just getting traffic and PR, then the more links the better.

If on the other hand you are interested in all search engines and improving sales, signups or enquiries without too much wasted traffic and server resources, Then having a lower count of more relevant links would be the way to go.

id rather have tons of links on unrelated sites. just because the site is unrelated doesn't mean the visitor will not be interested in visiting your link. the quality of traffic from unrelated sites may not be as productive, but look at email marketing. advertising in large numbers works, and if it didn't people wouldn't do it.

to be honest the traffic i get from links i have swapped with other webmasters is minimal (unless i get index link or sitewide). I get 95% of my traffic from search engines and it seems like the more links the better when trying to get 1st page ranking.

Less and more relevant links for me. This is more likely to bring targeted traffic.

I think mostly related links and less links is best. The links should have your keywords in them but they should be varied - not all say the same thing. Better to write some articles for one way links and to put up interesting content so people link to you as a reference.

I think the more links, the better. You will very rarely get traffic from links on other websites, unless those links are placed specifically to advertise your site. IMO text links are a way to get better search engine placement, and in that regard, more is better.

Right now just about link helps. Looking into the future though you'll be best positioned if you have on topic, relevant links.

I would rather have thousands of unrelated links versus 100s of related links because that will get your pagerank higher, more link in search engines, more traffic and such.

I'd rather have tons of unrelated as long as the achortext is relevant to what I'm trying to SEO for.

Go for related if you can, but a link is a link- esp. one from a good PR site for our friends at GG.

Though I'm not sure of the PR effectiveness these days (or at least the PR toolbar's accuracy). I say this b/c I have a relatively high traffic site with low PR that has all the spiders visiting multiple times daily. Any opinions?

It might take a while before the website's PR increases. SEO work is important in increasing PageRank too. As for the traffic, its each to his own standards since it is hard to judge on how much is high traffic and how much is low traffic. It varies from case to case, niche to niche...

links not related to your site is useless. Links with related content to your site still the best.

From my experience I'm stuck in second place on google for my primary search terms. The site that continues to hold 1st position month after month. Is basically crap. All it is a page filled with links and a paragraph of information about my site topic. Guess what the site is. It's a website directory of user homepages. So oviously having more links is better. Now I don't know whether having more targeted link referrals would help me get to the top. But the major sites I compete with for positions are directory sites. I've actually been pushed out of my second position by a link directory site I put a link on. How the heck that happens is beyond me. My biggest competitor all he does is use PPC. I used that for awhile and I had very low conversions.
