I'm doing some SEO for a friend, and his PHP homepage has the following at the top:

PHP Code:
<? $keyword "keywords were here"?>
Would it be a good idea to change it to meta? What's the point of having it how it is?

maybe it is called back into metter,

so it will be, on the header:
<meta name="keywords" content="<? $keyword ?>" />

.. otherwise, the obove will be irrelevent.

PHP is all processed server side, so nobody surfing the page can see the source (including search engine spiders). Like nuweb said, it is most likely being user later in the script, if not, take it out.

Yes, I forgot to mention that it is being processed by another script (in this case the header) where they become meta tags.

I just can't see any point.

Hi

I use dynamic TAGs with PHP to generate the Title and keywords TAGs and they have been indexed succesfully.

Yes, I can now see the point in these tags - if they're extracting from a database, or are based on other variable factors (i.e. search terms).

It's just in this particular case, the user didn't really have a reason.

Most likely copied from a source without fully understanding. Happens way too often when people want to get something out on the web without taking the time to learn, understand and then determine what is best...not just what is quick. IMHO.
