If text in a flash movie is selectable, does that make it readable/indexable by SEs? My dilemma is creating an aesthetically pleasing flash page, which does contain a good amount of pertinent text, but losing our currently solid SE rankings because that text isn't accessible.

If not, are there any suggestions for how to combat this problem?

I strongly suggest that you do not even think about trying to organise your SEO through your selectable text. If i were you, you should create a seperate folder within your website holding several pages with your key word text inside. I used PHP so i could locate the page to the home page with the flash so this information can't be viewed if typed in the url. This means your site will come up on engines like google with the URL of one of these pages, though it is forwarded to your flash page. You have to be carefull not to over do this due to Google thinking that this site may be clocked.

You must also link your flash site to this new folder so the spider can index the information entered. Also creating an RSS file gives the spider more to index
