Too Many Backlinks, Can get you banned?

Hi,
I am not a top rated SEO but I have read everywhere that when we get backlinks from FFA's and some other sites it really hurts our Page Rank!
You all must have read all this everywhere. And we all believe it that it is true.
Now What I object is that what would happen if I start blasting away at FFA's with google.com
Will it affect its PR.
Okay don't take Google.com.
Take some other poor fellow who has 4 or 5 PR for his little dear website.
Now he does'nt knows and If I again start blasting his Ads in FFA's then what will happen? His PR will get hurt.
People use many words. Like gets hurt or dissolves etc. etc.
But I don't think so. Do as much as you like It is not going to hurt. And I think it is also not going to make any better as long as PR is concerned.
But if some lone visitor comes follwing that links then it is a bonus.
I am not misguidig anyone here. Just think it your own way and then let me know. Because if website's PR would get hurt by posting to FFA's then every competitor would do that thing to the other.
Yeah one more thing. Don't ever go to SEO's they promise you that they will get your site on top 10 or top 20
Say if there are 21 web designers who want their websites in top 20 for keyword 'web design' Do you think they will say no to the 21st customer???
They will promise all the 21 customers that their site will be in top 20 at google for 'web design' which is not logically possible. Even if they have that much power to bring websites on top.

I found this Article at dummies.com
Quote:
Myth: Bad links to your site will hurt its position
Another common myth is that getting links to your site from "bad neighborhoods" (such as link farms, or Web sites unrelated to your site's theme) will hurt your search engine position. This isn't exactly so. It won't help, but it won't hurt, either, unless it is obvious that you are actively interacting with link farms or FFA (Free For All) link pages.
If bad links did hurt your site, you could ******inate your competition by linking to their sites from every lousy link farm and FFA you could find. So the search engines can't use such links to downgrade your site.

From : http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/Dumm...e/id-2517.html
So i don't really think that bad links will hurt your site.

More back links, the better. You just want to make sure that you get a lot of PR back links. This will help your PR and position in Google.

Try to only trade backlinks with sites that are 100% relevant to yours

If you have many backlinks in general it can't hurt your ranking.
BUT
if those backlinks appeared very quickly like one month, and your site is new, meaning still in the sandbox , then you are penalized, and you will stay in the sandbox for a few months.
It's not a theory, it happened to me.
Learn from my mistakes.

you can't really say that you can't have that lots of backlinks as other might link to you if you have a great site and informative contents....just be sure not to link with not related sites and bad neighborhood sites that might hurt for your site...

"PR backlinks" do nothing for SERPS. PR is entirely redundant, Never make any decisions based on PR.

You want links from authoritative sites, Regardless if it's related or not. Links from related sites will get your targeted traffic, Links from authoritative sites, Regardless of the content, Will help your SERPS... but it will only help your SERPS if you pick the anchor text carefully.

I wouldn't make such definitive statements unless I had some evidence. Do you have any evidence that "PR is entirely redundant"?
I'm in the camp that believes that the importance of PR is vastly overrated, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that it is definitely not used in the ranking algo, even some small way.

This is the type of myth that probably requires an understanding of how the individual ranking factors are interconnected in order to deal with it correctly. I would highly recommend that everyone read this blog post from one of the people who was involved in the Google Ranking Factors SEOmoz report.
Why am I saying this?
Because the backlinks in question could hurt a site's ranking (I'm not going to say PR because it's a minor factor at best).
How so?
The site owner could choose to link back to the bad neighbourhood in the interest of ensuring a (more) permanent link. There are link farm pages and scripts out there which will allow the owner to attain a (more) permanent link in exchange for a link. Behaviour like that can get the site banned, depending on circumstances.
However, if all the backlinks were one-way backlinks, it would be very unlikely that a scenario would occur whereby a site could get banned since this factor would be far too easy to manipulate. I won't say it's impossible since anything is possible, but it would be extremely unlikely and the owner of a quality site would never need to worry about it.

Real PR may be used in a marginal way and may have a insignificant effect on SERPS occasionaly, But toolbar PR is used for nothing, at no point, Ever, In the google algo. It's common knowledge.

No it didn't happen to you. That is TOTALLY impossible.
Explain to me how sites are born overnight, get on the news and overnight they are everywhere. Why would Google want to penalize that? Explain that one.
What you are talking about is getting tons of FFA links and linking back. As long as your not linking out to all those sites they will ONLY benefit you. You will never see a negative effect because of them.
