Good advice, but I would have to go with gringo on this one. And believe it or not, ranking should not be on the top list of anyone's webpages.

I don't get what is ment by "getting any spam reductions" in the following, "...the TITLE of the link should consist of a keyword followed by the word “link”. This prevents your page from getting any spam reductions."

If you are looking to make a popular site or to make money from a site then ranking should be the top, second, third and fourth thing you worry about.
Otherwise, how are you going to get visitors?

For me, Page Ranking is something that at the moment is a fad. If you design your site well, make it compliant with the two variables of development, and maintain usability, PR should be no problem.

no one said page rank, this discussion is about the actual rank of a persons site in the search engines, for a keyword. Page rank is just a measure and has little effect on rankings in my opinion as you often see low page rank sites doing better than high page rank sites. The thing you need is content and keyword appearances.

As to the initial post, Im not too sure how much of an effect this would have

either way as more people do it, google will wise up and give it less attention.

There are many ways to get your website to the top position in no time at all. The problem is Google will find out and ban your site for abusing its engine. Any site that shoots up the list that has a low page rank value is flagged by Google and they will punish you for this. One site that went with a bad firm got to the top spot within 1 day, but has now been banned for bad practise. Crime does not pay
