I've recently purchased a template for my website. I'm getting ready to upload it to replace the site I have now but before I do I have to put the keywords in. I'm just wondering how many keywords is best. Is there a corect number? By that I mean a maximum? And should they be repeated? Singular words or phrases?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Sanda

P.S. I am not a web designer so please go easy on me.

I don't know about the rest but I usually keep my keywords in the meta details within 20.

assuming you are talking about meta keywords, Have as many or as few as you need. Just don't expect any results for those words/phrases.

Thanks.
it's funny while researching keywords for my site I discovered thay one of my pages with no keywords at all is ranked no2 in google. So I guess it didn't need keywords to rank.

well not quite.

You do need keywords/phrases to rank, just not in the meta keywords.

I'm very new to seo, and thought meta keyword is one of the crucial thing to getting to the top 1 rank on search engines. Therefore I spent a lot of times using overture and wordtracker after reading from several books, but even after spending lots of effort on keywords I still can't get on a good rank on google.

And if you are relying on the meta keywords you never will. Google may or may not read the meta Keyword content but they certainly do not use any words in there for ranking at all.

Each search engine, from industry dominant Google, to Yahoo, to MSN Search, to the various other search engines, has a different keyword calculation. Some search engines permit heavier keyword numbers and density on the page, while some like Google, have much stricter allowable density levels. The placement of keywords, in any number of locations on the page, has different results in the various search engines as well.

Consideration must also be given to such additional on page keyword modifications as bolding, italic, and actual keyword type size used. Other factors include the use of page titles, and their relative importance to the various search engines, as keyword delivery vehicles.
A good article by Wayne Hurlbert

I think you should visit this article for keyword optimization http://www.dime-co.com/seo/keyword_optimization.shtml. IMO, Keyword weights (semantic approach) is a right way. I think you should also visit this site to get more ideas.

Focus on keywords in the body content (links, image alt tags, text). Make sure your pages have a title tag and a description meta tag with one or two keywords.

I often struggle with deciding how many keywords to have in the meta description. is there any general rule to follow?

"keyword density" another totally meaningless metric to confuse the newbies with.

A meta description should be a meaningful sentence, that matches the description of the page exactly. Including the keywords in the sentence will increase the chance of it becoming the snippet in the SERP.

If you have a page that is about bass fishing with tackle under $100 then your description should be "bass fishing with tackle under $100". If your page is about how to tune a 100 year old piano then the description should be "how to tune a 100 year old piano". If your page is about how to train a cat to do peepee in the toilet your description should be "how to train a cat to do peepee in the toilet".

It really is that simple, The clue is in the name of the meta tag, It's a meta description.
