LinkPopularity numbers vary

I use LinkPopularity to periodically check my links. I watched the links steadily grow since August 05 but over the last 2 or 3 weeks the results can fluctuate by as many as 200 links. Wondering why this would be so. I did email LinkPopularity but as yet have not heard back.

Using 'link:my site' in yahoo and msn I get a similar variation.

Anyone here know the cause of large fluctuations?

Fluctuations are common for many reasons. One, some sites add and drop links, Two, search engines periodically update the backlinks causing drops and climbs, and three, Google, It's own "entity" does backlinks updates and only includes the results that they feel are "important enough to list", so the backlink numbers are of a lesser value. I myself check link popularity every day on my own site here:
http://www.searchbliss.com/seo-tools/popularity.asp
I used to use MarketLeap's until I developed my own. Why? Because they can't seem to update it fast enough. They STILL have HotBot and Google results listed seperately even though they are the SAME results (HotBot results are powered by Google). It did however inspire me.

Why would you want to check links to a site daily? What on earth can it tell you. What use is it knowing this particular metric?

Check it occasionally by all means but even once a month tells you nothing useful at all. Looking at your logs for inbound links is a more useful pastime.

Thanks everyone. My problem with Marketleap is they do not update their tools enough. They still have Google and HotBot listed as seperate engines and of course they both show the same number of results. All of HotBots results are powered by Google, so I think this is a big oversite causing unreliable results. This is not good for an SEO company in my book. Anyway, thanks for using SearchBliss!

As well as fluctuations in backlinks i also see huge variations between backlinks in different search engines. Why is this?

hmmm... I still would have thought that their bots find the majority of your backlinks no matter the search engine.

Do you think they filter through the links they find, discounting some of them?

Maybe they do, maybe they don't. Maybe they just don't show everyone they know about

Hope this isn't meant as a serious question.
