The idea of the sitemap is so that visitors can navigate around your site sections easier.
On larger sites it helps bring deep contact to the surface
As you are involved in diverse areas i guess you should structure it as a sort of directory index. Ie various categories with your sections listed under the relevent title.
Often you will see the site map tag on the home page of a site for users to find. On your site it should say "site map" and list your content not an xml feed. If you want to display an xml feed then say so "XML feed"
If you are doing the map just for seo reasons in effect a list of the site pages off your index page does the trick anyway. Whilst google are into site map submission i havent seen any real problems with google finding a site and deep crawling it anyway.
