Most RSS feeds show an excerpt from the original page and then link back to the page. I don't think there's an issue with duplicate content at all.
I was reading something last night where someone thought he had noticed that most of the sites at the top in Google seem to have some RSS links on the home page so that the page always has fresh content. I think though it's more that a site that has fesh content tends to get a lot more links pointing to it which is the reason for the good rank.
What RSS can do is either provide your site with fresh content or provde other sites with a link back to yours, both of which can help a site get more traffic.

There are a lot of special directories, where you can submit your RSS-feed. Then webmaster, who want to place some RSS on his site page, will find your site.
I think the golden trick with the RSS feeds is to get it listed on as many RSS directories as possible. That way you can generate 100+ backlinks simply by having the RSS located.
Further, every time you update your RSS the search engines see the new content and how its related to your site.
