Hello I am Chris and I am trying to build a website, even though its tough, I hope it will be around for a while.

Now I am in the progress of getting my affiliates placed and still working on the site. I am tring to make a drop down box with all of the U.S. states in in, but I am lost

anyways..

But I am here to find out about SEO. I mean if meta tags are like outdated, then how do you get the search engines to read you? Do you mainly need to pay for the pay per click stuff?

I have read how you talked about linking back to a site, that confuses me on how you would make it anyways, It would be cool if you could save your link with an identifying emblem, but again thats over my head.

I read Van Goghs section about 7 SEO myths, and I really enjoyed it.

But I also wonder that say you make a description, make some tags, will that even get you anywhere? Or is it mostly advertising on sites and stuff like that?

Or mainly just get submitted to search engines and pay for some clicks for a month or two and then your name will be out there and you won't have to try as hard?

I know I am throwing alot of things out there, but I am excited about this website venture that I am on.

I hope to learn alot from all of you.

I'm glad you enjoyed my blog post Chris. The meta descripton tag is used more like a marketing thing to entice people to click on your link. There may be some seo benefits, but they would be limited at best.

The best way to get a handle on seo is just to read a lot. It can be hard because there's a lot and I mean a lot of misinformation out there. I posted a link to Search Engine Ranking Factors at the SEOmoz site in one of your other threads and I've obviously posted it here as well.

I think the most important things to know about seo is that there are no magical formulas. It mostly takes a lot of hard and at times often tedious work. It's no different than any other form of marketing in that it's an ongoing process and the more you put into it the more you can get out of it.
