Need Help with SEO and marketing my site

I am setting up a new business and am so confused with all the info out these days regarding SEO. I read Googles advice and stayed away from these companies that make awesome promises but don't deliver. I designed my site in basic html and may put a little php.
Which is the best way to get on the first page of Google, Yahoo and all the leading search engines, without spending loads of money? And how do I promote my site? I got quotes for buying legit op-in email addresses and nearly fell off my chair. I am consider Google AdWords.
Please somebody give me some good advice.
Jill

Hi Jill
There are two main things you can do to SEO - you're probably aware of them.
1. Optimise your content. This means making sure your desired keywords appear enough throughout the page. There are other things, such as keyword prominence etc. You can get free software such as WebCeo to help you with this. I don't recommend you take the advice too seriously, as it can often result in ugly pages full of non-sensical keywords! A good SEO'er (if that's a word) will ensure the keyword density etc. is good and the site still reads well to the end user, which is the most important thing!
2. Inbound links. You need to get as many sites linking to you as you can - but not any sites. Try to get relevent ones - i.e. related to typing etc. Also, it's extremely important that your keywords are in the anchor text - which shouldn't be too much of a problem seeing as you've got a good domain (tell them to link to "Hire a typist" or similar).
All the above comes back to content. If you have good content, step one will pretty much happen on it's own. As for step two, people will be linking to your site if they find it useful.
Since you provide a service, it'll be harder to gain inbound links though. Try offering link exchanges on this forum, possibly start a directory, and/or consider buying some in. But be warned - the changes won't be instant, especially not on Google. The best advice is to buy text links to gain new clients, and see SEO as a bonus.
As for promotion, Google Adwords is a good start. Work out your profit per sale, estimate a conversion rate, do a trial run and go from there. You can always hire somebody to help on Adwords if you're not sure how to run your campaign cost effectively.
You may want to check that link
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice Harvey, I downloaded WebCEO and am having a look at it now. I was intending to put links on my site anyway but am looking around for the best type of links to use, I know they have to be relevant to my site.
I do have a sitemap page on my site, but have not implemented it yet.
Another thing I read on Google was that they ignore anything but html and php. I end up paranoid about what is right and wrong.
Does anybody have an sound advice on building a site search?
Thanks again for all of your advice, I shall be using it.

Jill mostly you want to build a good site. Think of your visitors first and search engines second. It sounds like you've actually got a good start by realizing all those sites with huge promises aren't worth the time.
A really simplified version of how to get better search engine ranking is to spend some time researching keywords and then optimize your pages for those keywords. Each page should only be optimized for 2-3 keyword phrases at most. And each page of your site should be optimized for different keyword phrases.
Write a good keyword rich title for every one of your pages. Don't stuff keywords into your page titles, but it's ok to use them a couple or three times. If you write your content with human beings in mind and keep the page focused on a topic then chances are you will have optimized the content. By all means use keywords in page headings and just as in the titles don't overdo it.
You'll also want to get links pointing to your site. One way, relevant links will be the best though as long as you stay away from adding your site to spammy sites it's ok to get a link there. It can also be a good idea to link out to quality sites. With both inbound and outbound links think of your site visitors. If your visitors will find another site useful then add a link to that site on your site. If visitors to another site would find your site useful and even click on a link to your site then you want to have a link to your site on that other site.
Most importantly don't look for any magic formulas. SEO takes time and hard work and it's not something you do for a few weeks or months and then stop. Depending on your keywords you'll find it easy or hard to get a top ranking. Non competitive terms are pretty easy to get a #1 rank while competitive keywords may take years to get into the top 50.
Oh and don't forget to add a link to your site in your forum signature.

A lot of companies I talk to just state they want results like "Page 1 listing" or "#1 listing" -
Unfortunetly it is not that simple. If I can make one recommendation, it would be to have GOOD USEFULL CONTENT.
I see so many sites that are more or less just "This is my company, I provide this service, you should use my services."
Think up content you can put on your site that people will find useful. Not only will the search engines pick up on the content and keywords, people will be more likely to link to you and refer to your site. This will start boosting the page rank and listings naturally...

I agree with Ross. even if your site does come up in a search engine results page unless you have some useful content on your site it's not going to matter much. I suppose there are exceptions, but for most of us it will ultimately be our content that will help make the sale.

get listed in directories. DMOZ First. just type directories in google. Thats a good place to start. As far as links go. find quality links from reputable companies that compliment your business. If your selling cars don't link to poker sites.

Personally i think the golden rule for creating a site that is both successful in search engines and gets a lot a visitors is to make a good site that gives people something they want. Good sites never fail...
You could get to #1 in google, but what good will that do if every visitor says "what the hell is this crap" and closes the browser.
Like Van said, Creating a site for people is always the first step.
Because if you can create a site that people like they will end up doing all of your marketing for you by telling thier friends, posting your link on thier sites and on forums they visit.
Virlal marketing is always the most effective form or marketing.
If you can get 10% of your visitors to tell just one of thier friends about your site, in no time you will be getting 1000s of unique visitors a day,

When you optimize your site you should think about people. Position of your site in SE listings is important, but it will only bring people to your site and won't guarantee that visitor will buy some your product or service.
So first of all you should think about nice design, good content and then about heywords and links.

I agree. As important as traffic to your site is, converting that traffic is even more important. I'd rathe have one visitor come to my site and spend some money than have 1000 visitors come and immediately click tha browser's back button.
To convert visitors to customers you need to build a site for people and not search engines.

Thank you all guys
You show me the right way to go ... at the begining I intended to spam keywords in my title pages, I though I would much help in building google ranking ...and now I really find the important, yes, it's the must to build a website for people first then for the spiders. A good site, good content never fails ... the right way to go.
thanks men

I have to be honest, Google and Yahoo ADs work but can be costly. You really have to manage you account because it is a pay per click program.
If your site is not ready for the amount of traffic you could spend a lot of money just to have people look at your site and leave it. That is the chance though. Now your site can produce income if priced correctly and you site serves its purpose.

Oh well Midas, my site doesn't work because i was daft enough to get the url wrong.
It is www.hireatypist.co.uk, there that should work.
Anyway, thanks for all the help and advice. I shall be putting it all into effect. I have not had much time over the last couple of weeks to work on it.
What I would like you all to do for me is have a look at my site and tell me what you think. Let me know if you think the content is ok.
I am new to this so don't start screaming that it is crap, crap, crap. I would like some constructive criticism and advice.
Thanks guys.

Oh, by the way. It is not fully functioning yet. I haven't set up my sitemap, site search, Paypal payment system and I am thinking of changing my form to PHP.
Advice would be helpful on all of these items as I have never implemented a site search or sitemap before.
Thanks again.
