this might be a stupid question but is there any advantage to hosting my reciprocal link directory on a subdomian?

You can do this. But if you want to exchange links with other sites, you should Know that usually webmasters don't want to exchange with subdomains.

there is absolutely no advantage to this, on the other hand you might put off a lot of people who are willing to exchagne links with you...

There is nothing wrong with subdomains for SEO. Webmaster who don't like idea to have link on subdomain, probably don't know nothing or they know very little about SEO.

You can use subdomain, but then you need to work on BL for subdomain and TLD. Subdomain will get some value from TLD also.

If you put your directory under folder on TLD then you already have some BL to TLD, and you don't need to promote 2 domains.

It's like seohr said. I believe the search engines will treat your subdomain as a different domina so you're probably better off just using a subdirectory. Reciprical linking while still providing backlinks to your site isn't the most effective method of link building. You generally want more one-way inbound links. Recips are fine, but keep them as a smaller percentage of your overall backlinks.
