Sudden drop in Alexa rankings

Hi All,

The Alexa rankings of one of our sites dropped significantly (96%). And I don't see any visitors showing up on the graph since March.. Despite the fact that we haven't really gone down in our daily
visitors. Any ideas why this is happening? Other similar sites appear to have maintained their standings.

Thanks,
Maggie

Alexa rankings as in the ranking itself or as in the SERP rankings?

In the case of the former, it's pretty well meaningless since it's based off of the Alexa toolbar and, if you visit your own site, you'll be able to manipulate it pretty easily and quickly. The toolbar also only works in IE and represents a small portion of the population.

I'd be more concerned with SERP rankings.

I mean Alexa rankings as in the ranking itself, not the SERPs. I know it's meaningless, just such big drop looks strange to me...

Since Alexa rankings are based only on people who have the toolbar installed the sample for their data can be easily manipulated. It becomes more accurate for lagre sites with lots of traffic, but for smaller sites even just a few people either visiting or not visiting your site can have a huge impact and result in big changes in the ranking.

Alexa rankings are unpredictable and you'll sometimes see weird things like this.
