Hello friends,

I just read in an article over at site-refernce that redirects is a bad thing for SEO. What i want to know is i have many pages that used to be indexed really well with good incoming links which no longer exist, i have used the redirects feature in CPanel to redirect users to my home page so that people arnt getting 404 errors,

If this is a bad thing to do, what can i do?

no it's not a "bad thing" to do it's absolutely the right thing to do. Point users to the new page best suited for their needs.

just the usual BS from half-witted SEO "experts"

Always always use the permanent redirect instead of temporary redirect. Basically it won't hurt your existing search engine rankings. Sooner spiders will update the already ranked pages to the redirected ones. I am 100% confident about it as I have done it many times.

I have a idea why not use a permanent redirection. my old directory link used that and my rankings seem to still be good. I think. If you use a permanent redirection your telling google that your permanently moving to a new domain, or website sort like moving to a new home and posting a message at your old home telling to goto your new home.
