Hello yall...

The other day i was talking to a friend who said I should take me domain and split it in 2 words instead of the one that would not be reconized.

It made sense to me, so i registered another domain that had a - in it to seperate the 2 words.

After doing so, I asked my server provider whats the best way to go about this.

My questions were..

Should I move an index into the new domain folder?

Here was his reply.

"The best way to do this is to delete the new girlfriends-lingerie.com domain
from your domains list, then under the Domains icon, edit the existing
girlfriendslingerie.com domain and click on the button to add a Domain Alias.
Fill in girlfriends-lingerie.com and leave the checkboxes in the default
states. After about 24 hours, girlfriends-lingerie.com will properly resolve
to girlfriendslingerie.com, without a redirect and without the need to copy
website content. "

That was what he sent me...So i did what he said, now the new name with the - now works and goes to my site.

My problem here is, and this is why im wring to you all here. How would i submit this new domain name to the search engines when there isnt an actual, lets say "Index" to point it to. Sure the allais goes to my default store, but shouldnt there be somethign for the engines to see when pointing them to the new allias.

The main reason i did this is to get more exposure in the engines to my main keyword, thus seperating the url to a better seen keyword with the -.

How would you all see this thru? Did I do it right based o nwhat my website provider stated?

Thanks all... I will look forword to any replies you may have.

Nope

You shouldn't have listened to the "friend" who suggested it in the first place. All you have is 1 website with 2 names if you start promoting the other name you will cause all kinds of problems along the way.

301 redirect the second name to the main domain and don't give it another thought.

Thanks Chris for that super fast reply......

So your saying that this idea was a bad one period.... That even my server provider gave me bad info on how to implement it?

Ive been having such a hard time getting into the engines with my main keyword. This sounded like a plausable plan at the time, so i went for it.

So doing an allias with the new name to point to the original is a bad idea?

When he had me remove it from my domain list, the folder that it generated was gone also. This did concern me, as there would be no physical point for the engines too see. I was originally thinking of transferign all my code and site into that folder, but when he said it would be best to just remove it and then allais o the other, i did that. Im just desperate, and am looking for all the help i can get

Anyways Chris thank you again for the reply..Fastest reply ive ever seen..Great site you have here.

Bless

Dan

Datagg one thing to keep in mind is that the domain with the dash probably isn't going to make much of a difference in where your pages rank in search engines. There's a lot more to it than a domain name.

Without even looking I feel safe in saying you're in a very competitive industry and that it's going to take a lot of hard work to get your pages to rank well.

You mentioned submitting to search engines which isn't anything I'd bother with. It won't help your site at all. Adding a link to your site in your forum signature will probably do more to get your site indexed than submitting to search engines.

Chris is right in that a 301 redirect is the best way to go to have one domain point to another, but again don't expect it to make a big difference in where you rank. You may want to spend a little time here reading what you can about seo.

Thanks guys for your replies......

Im still a bit onfused though. Doign some searching, im seeign thanks that suggests alliases are a common thing.... And used allot..

i just found this term...

Domain Alias

A domain name that points to another domain. Domain aliases enable users to access the same Web site through a number of different addresses. For example, many companies register several similar domain names (such as common misspellings of their domain name) and then use domain aliases to have all of the domain names point to the same site.

so im really confused here.....

Many conflicting ideas on this......

a domain alias when used as above is quite correct, this is where the 301 redirect comes. It ensures that only the content at one URI is indexed by SEs and seen by users.

While having duplicates is not the big no-no that many like to make it out to be, it can cause problems. You can never predict which URI may get shown for any query, Which URI people will link to etc.
If you want to be in control of which site users see, link to and which one SEs rank then redirect to your choice.

301 Redirects
