The importance at least depends what end you are on, sending or receiving?
IF sending it gets your content and site out there to other sites.
If receiving, you get some free content on your site

I think you will have to submit your RSS to feeders to gain exposure once you successfully made your RSS. I'm not sure if it is the proper way to do it (SEO experts anyone?) but I'm getting good site visits from this method

You can submit RSS feeds to feed diirectories, But they provide minimal traffic in my experience.
The best thing to do with RSS feeds is let FF users subscribe to live bookmarks, And have buttons so people can add your feed to thier google home page, netvibes newsgator and things like that.

I use Feeds mainly to get current visitors to keep coming back rather than attract new visitors.

Well there's hope. If you are running some established content management system, they might have modules that generate RSS for you. All you have to do is to install some modules and you are good to go.

If you are running a system that's plain html, then google is your best friend.
