Where to place the nav menu for SEO?

I've recently noticed that in my industry (travel/holidays) websites are now placing navigation menus on the right hand of the page , our site currently has a menu on the left all in drop down boxes so that spiders can read the text. What implications if any , do i have with moving the menu to the right? Does this affect spidering at all?

In your specific case, as chrishirst said, none.

Search engines don't read through dropdown boxes.

i'm pretty sure that they do read through normal drop down boxexs as the cache of the page reflects this ?

the cache of the page is merely the source code, so it would be there.

Spiders/indexers can't submit forms and don't trigger javascript so that bit of the page is just a chunk of text.

By placing nav menu on the right your main content gets more prominence in search engine ranking.

If you still prefer left side nav you can use use layers to accomodate the nav menu and position the layer where you want and the html for the layer should go after the main content of the page.

Or there are fes ways to format your pages using CSS layout which makes your pages search engine friendly even with left side nav menu.
