Heres a tutorial on search engine submission... Don't do it, It's pointless.
Spend your time getting backlinks and let search engines find you on their own, It will be better in the long run.

I agree completely with stOx about submitting to search engines. There's no need to do it at all. They'll find you if you have a few links pointing to your site. The ones in your signature here should be enough.
Here's an seo basics tutorial I wrote not too long ago. It's certainly not the only one available. You can also spend some time reading through the seo forums here or at other forums. I know we've covered the basics here many times as have other forums. They should all point you to more links as well.

I also agree with stox. Point in hand, I created a website and began marketing it on thursday night at midnight(-6:00 GMT). I am already indexed by Google, MSN, and Yahoo, and have been since Sunday afternoon, and I didn't submit it to a single search engine, and only began listing on directories on Saturday. The website was registered about 8 days ago.

Yep, spend your time submitting to directories. Search engines will find your site if you have enough links.

I pretty much agree with the others but just to cover my back I submit to Google, Ask, MSN and Yahoo these pretty much supply a broad range of engines.
Then I go to DMOZ and submit my address (and wait 10 years)
But having your link on your profile and posting on site forums like this is a really quick way to get indexed. (Yeah I know, wheres mine? I've only just got here and not even unpacked)
Also three big tips for links coming back to your site:
If you're selling sports equipment then go post on sports forums/sites as I think it's Google places a lot of weight on the relevance of the two connecting pages/sites.
Also if you're going to link, make sure the link coming back to your site reads something relevant for the above I'd probably use 'cheap tennis gear' as the link text not 'click here to see my site'
And if the sites have a high page rank thats another plus, but remember make sure it's relevant to your site.
Good Luck

I agree with Chris. Best to stay away from any kind of automated submitter.

I agree with most of you here. I began submitting my website to all the major search engines but found it useless. I since learned that the best and most important search engines will easily find your website.

I would consider asking:
1. How long he has been working on SEO.
2. If he has had professional training or or self-taught.
3. Website references of SEO work already done.
4. Broadly or specifically, what would be the items that are tweaked?(If possible, I would ask him for a quick review of my site first)
5. If it's just consultation that they provide or will they take up the work too.
6. What does their service cost me? Itemised break-up of cost.
7. What are the other likely costs (for instance, webpage redisigning) may incur? Or if it's included in their fee.
8. How long it would take to carry out the changes.
9. If they "guarentee" any improvements. If so what improvements would you get to see. And, as per them, approximately how long will it take for the effect to show.
10. What are the likely trade-offs.
11. I would also be interested in knowing what keywords/phrases he may want to optimize my site with.
Hope this helps...
Cheers & Good luck.

Barbara the questions Sid gave above are all good. I'd also add just asking about their basic approach and see if what they say agrees with what you know to be good pracitces and avoids spammy and risky practices.
Look for any guarantees about ranking and run if they offer any or claim they can absolutely bring you a certain amount of traffic or things like that.
If you can find out who some of their clients are (they may not want to say and it's reasonable for them not to) and see if you can find those clients with searches. Try searching for a few words in the titles of their pages. If they can't be found for the complete page title the seo probably didn't do a good job at all.
