I would like to use around 20 keywords for my site. Is this amount too much?

Depends. Do you have at least 10-15 pages to spread those keywords around to? You generally only want 1-2 keywords per page to focus on.

only 20 ?? Why are you limiting your sites earning potential? surely there are hundreds of terms you should be looking for visitors on.

and you should be using phrases not words

Well...he did say words, so I figure if he targets the words, then the phrases will come longtail. Hence my comment.

Thanks a lot

Depends
The world of SEO isn't at all black and white (including the hats ) and what works for one page/subject will not work for another

So generally;
a site in a competitive marketplace may be only able to focus on 2 or 3, but depending on the copywriters art and skill could be in there with 3, 4 or more.

with lower competition phrases, 8 and upwards wouldn't be a problem. But even this will depend on skill. If you can write copy for one phrase that reads well an doesn't put buyers off then a single phrase is possible.

Why not start with a few good strong keywords first. Use a keyword research tool and find out what phrases are the most popular.

You can always add more later, and they'll be easier to rank for too. It'll save you some time trying to optimize your pages for all those words and give you time to focus on marketing the real good ones.

You can get penalized if you have keywords in the meta tag which are not on your page.

Just a thought.

Chris is exactly right here. There isn't an exact answer mostly because seo isn't an exact science. The general rule of thumb would say 1-3 keyphrases per page, but you can rank well for many non-competitive keyphrases on a single page and enough skill would say you could probably target 4-5 phrases or maybe more.

I generally pick one keyphrase for a page and then use a couple of modifiers here and there to turn that single keyphrase into 2 or 3 keyphrases to target. The I just write a naturaly sounding page and often rank well for phrases I wasn't really expecting snce they are rather non-competitive.
