Hi,

Does it matter (for Search Engines) if you give out 'personal' links to sites like:

http://www. mysite .com/index.cfm?fa=bla&req=2232

They all come to the same page, but each link will have another req number.

Does it help anyway in getting a higher PR?

Not that PR matters , But NO it doesn't.

every URL with a different number is a seperate instance, so will have it's own place in the index, with it's own PR and be an exact duplicate of your sites home page.

Why ???

are you not creating the links for the benefit of knowing where your useful trafiic comes from?
Are these links for affiliate tracking?

IF (and this is a very big if, as I will explain in a moment) you're looking for SEO benefit from the links, the best thing you could do is to process the querystring info (probably by creating a referral cookie) and then using a 301 to redirect the user (or SE spider) to the appropriate page (likely the index page).

Now...the reason it's a big if is exactly what chrishirst pointed out. These links are created for affiliate traffic and tracking, not search engine benefit. Use them for what you intend to use them for, and no more. You avoid any potential duplicate content issues and you also are able to track real traffic.

Well, i can see where my traffic is comming from in on my statistics page.

I thought of creating more links to my site if i offer people such functionality.
(see my idea: Online-Image-Editor Help Pages )

I noticed that google adds immediatly reacted to my url string.

I tested with: http: / / www . online-image-editor . com / index.cfm? fa=req&id=aaaaa
I immediatly got an add on my page displaying something about 'Req'.

But now i am not going to make unique url's for referring site. Now i think more in this way.

People will have to give me their site url. I will give them (for example) the following link: http: / / www . online-image-editor . com / index.cfm? fa=image_editing

When people click on that link, i can get the cgi.http_referer.
Here i can check from which site the referal was, and show to the visitor their logo (or whatever they want), and directly place it in a cookie on the visitors computer, so when they come next time directly to the my site, the logo of the initial referal will still be showed.

Reasons for taking this link:
1) All referal links will be the same, which is good for SEO
2) I get the word 'editing' also included better for SEO
3) Easy way of figering out it was a referal from another site (so i don't have to check every request if it was a referal from another site (as my page refers a lot to itself))

Is it a good idea, or just plain stupid?

hmm, just checked out what the 301 redirect is for.

Interesting also...

But how to place a cookie when i am redirecting the page?
I have to flush some contents to the visitor if i want to set a cookie...

I can't just:
1) visitor enters page at mysite .com/index.cfm?fa=req&id=aaaaa
2) place a cookie
3) redirect with a 301

The cookie will not get to the visitor in this way.

One more question

I see that with a Permanently Moved 301, the URL stays the same as it was.
While with a 302 the URL of the browser changes to the new URL of the location specified to redirect to....

Is 301 prefered in my case or 302?
(as i prefer myself to have just the basic path of the URL displayed to visitors)
