I have read somewhere else that domain age is one of factor to get high ranking and PR in google. Google also consider domain age of backlinking sites. Any other SEs do this?

In my experience, I think Google is the only engine that has an age factor.

it is like the alexa traffic rank the older your site the higher it is ranked usually even if you have the same traffic as a newer site

It's crap.

Domain age has absolutely nothing to do with it

I agree with Chris. I haven't been keeping a close eye on the latest SERPS but my previous theory was that google runs many checks on your inbound links. Basically things like how long they stay linking to you etc.. and during this period google wouldn't credit the benefit of having these incoming links to your site. Once the checks were finished then they would credit them and your rankings would improve. Many people have different theories on this subject, as a first port of call do a google for "Sandbox Effect".

IMO getting quality links from trusted sites in a steady manner is the best way for initial link building. Do a google for "Authority Sites" for more information.

I'm going to disagree a little bit. Google is placing more of emphasis in it's algorithm on things relating to trust and the age of a domain can be a measure of trust. A site that has been online for 10 years might be seen as more trustworthy than a site that went up yesterday. A site isn't a domain of course.

That doesn't mean that having a domain that has aged is an automatic guarantee of high ranking and it has nothing at all to do with PR. But the age of a lot of things is becoming more of a factor with Google than it previously was.

Brand new domains can still rank well though. I'd follow Guerilla's advice for building trusted links with a new site.

By the way nice to see you Guerilla. Been awhile I think.

Yes you are right but it is not factor for ranking.

That's where I disagree a little. I think TrustRank is part of the algorithm. How much I couldn't say. I don't want to imply if you get yourself an old domain you're going to be on page 1 of the results, but I do think domain age is part of the TrustRank calculation and thus part of the overall algorithm.

There's obviously more to things than the age of a domain name. Google most likely has the ability to tell if the domain has changed hands or has changed in nature so just buying up a 10 year old domain isn't a quick road to success.

And there are also many other things that will go into determining trust, like your link profile for one.

However if you put the same content on a site that went up yesterday and one that's been consistently only for a few years I feel confident saying the domain and site that's a few years old will rank better. And that's assuming that linkage data is the same for both sites.

I don't think it's a major factor in where a page will rank and I do think new sites can still rank well, but I still think there's something to domain age.

Everything I've read recently says age is a big factor in ranking. I tend to think what makes more sense is length of time indexed with consistent content, aka "Archive.org Score".

Search "Google Ranking Criteria" or "Google Ranking Factors" and see for yourself.

If age IS defined as "Length of time indexed", certainly, as the URIs associated with the "domain name" have "served their time, as in apprenticeships, not jail sentences. Although both analogies work.
They have built up "trust", "authority", "value" or whatever you wish to call it, provided that the site operator has been active in promotion and marketing.
