Hi friends. Can anyone help? I am confused over conflicting comments regarding the use of TITLES, KEYWORDS and DESCRIPTIONS.

I own a retail internet site that specializes in guitar, etc, related accessories. Take a look www.USStrings.com

I have been told that the title should vary on each page; I understand that - although I haven't done it yet. But what about KEYWORDS -- I've heard everything from use just one or two per page -- to use a 100; everything that you can imagine that pertains to the products on that page. Same question re. the description - does that have to change page by page?

I am very new to this and pretty confused. Any help would be appreciated.

There's always something to learn!

<title>

Yes it helps if the title is different on each page. Many search engines use this as the link name in search results. As you're running store its good to have product category names and descriptions, ie

Bass strings - Hi-Beam - Stainless Steel Bass Strings

Description

Essential! Used by some search engines as a description of the page contents. Aim for 30-35 words max and include as many key words and phrases as you can

Keywords

Not used much any more - just a list of words/phrases relevant to the page

Include keywords in your head tags, anchor links, and content. you don't need to include meta tag for keywords, but putting one or two keywords in meta won't harm Most of the major search engines use spider robots rather than meta robots. So if you use the keywords properly, the spider robots will pick those out from your web site.

You seem to be confused between META keywords and keywords as used in the page copy.

Meta keywords; Use as many or as few as you need for the page, anywhere between none and a lot. It will make between none and a tiny bit of difference to your optimisation efforts.

Copy keywords/phrases; use two maybe three per page based on your keyword research. When used correctly and appropriately these will make a large difference to your optimising.

meta description; Different for every page and should be relevant to the page copy.
This is especially important from two angles,
1/ a well witten and copy keyword matched meta desc will show in the SERPs as the snippet of text. This can generate better qualified clickthroughs.
2/ It appears (from observation) that the meta desc is a one factor in Google placing pages in the supplemental index, so having different descriptions (even two or three words) may help keeping your pages out of the SI.
