I just have a new website launched and I suddenly found myself becoming fixated with SEO. Are meta tags still in use? The ebooks and other resources I’ve read have different points on meta tags.

The description tag is sometimes used as the sample text in SERPS, But the keywords meta tag is useless.

That's not totally true.

There's a certain small group of people (of which I'm one) who use meta tags that don't work simply to throw off idiots or give them something to complain about. It's funny as hell watching blackhats rip on a site for using the revisit-after tag.

God, I'm evil.

The Description tag still appears to have some value with some search engines. Anyway, it only takes a minute to add it, so why not?

Well depends upon which Metas you are talking about because Title and Description tags are the only tags that are still important others are useless now.

I've found that when there's little content, the keywords tag helps my adsense filters.

Meta Tags are useful for the serps, just be careful not to go too crazy with them becasue google sees this as spamming.

I believe there are also a very, very small percentage of SE's that use them to index your site (dogpile for some reason comes to mind, don't quote me on that). You should be thinking about how your time can best be spent - either getting a visitor or two (literally) through some small SE, or working on better content for your site so that you get a whole lot more visitors.

I personally ignore meta tags all together.

It was in the past when meta tags were considered to be the key factor for achieving high search engine rankings.
Nowadays all major search engines rarely us meta tags, except for the Title and Description Tags. However there are some smaller search engines that still use meta tags. Anyways using few meta tags won’t cause much harm to the website as in most cases the spiders wont crawl it.

Something to remember about the description tag. It should be written to motivate people (in addition to using your keywords). Remember, if people do a search that puts your website on the results page, they'll have 10 choices (organically) on the first page. That's where those titles and descriptions come into play.

Sure, you want to incorporate your keywords in the title element and description tag, but you also want to include some personality and a call-to-action. Pull people in by separating your listing from the other 9 organic listings on the SERP.

Good luck.
