I'm a little new to this and I was wondering if this is a good idea.

One of my websites has a title, which is by coincidence, the same as a popular search word. When I do a search on Yahoo, my websites comes up on the second page, (and I have a page rank of 0. I just started this spring).

I'm tired of making Google rich with adword payments. I was thinking, on my other websites, instead of putting the name of the website in the title tag, of using a search word in the title tag instead.

It occured to me that if you do a search, you almost never see a company name or website name in the search result header, but some form of advertisement instead. (I'm assuming that what shows up there is what you put in the title tag).

Can someone tell me if it's ok to do this or if it's really mandatory to put your website name in the title tag?

Thanks

It's probably best to do both, Especialy if you want to market your site as a brand.

something like;
<title>Site name - keyword rich title describing what is on the page</title>

Do something along the lines of - "[Company Names] | [Short description]" Try to keep the short description to about 5-6 words.

Actually I'd reverse that. Unless your company name contains your keywords or your brand is strong enough that people will search for it you would do better to place your company name at the end of the title. Place the keywords toward the front.

Your title is perhaps the most important place to add keywords on your page. It's not about stuffing as many in there as possible. Mention them once at the beginning and you're done.

Also even though page titles appear in the head of your document they're not really meta. They get included with meta tags a lot, but they aren't really the same thing. I just wanted to make that distinction.

Title tags are like the most oldest trick in the book. But, they still are relevant anyways. I'm really confused in stuff related to create quality site layout actually.

For example, I'm coufused how I should place my blog posts in blog. I've a posted a thread on it too at How should I place the posts on my Blog frontpage ?. But, pity, I havent got a reply in about week. Webmaster-talk is getting inactive. I'm gonna post it all forums I know.

Search engines value tje closer terms to the left higher than others. So put your main keywords to the left.

Also, unless you want to adveritise your brand (sitename) and make it famous (which I dont think you should), you dont need to include the website name ayways. Use the extra space you have for more relavent keywords and description.

Cheers

By the front I did mean the left. If we read from left to right then the left is the front.

I think it's ok to use your company name at the end. If your company name includes one of your keywords then it gets another one in there in a non-spammy way. If your company name doesn't include keywords it will dilute the optimization of the title tag, but it can help with branding your company name. It's a judgement call.

solidghost you're right about not using the description for the seo benefit, but sometimes an action word in the beginning can help convince people to click on the link. Another judgement call.
