Sounds like something made-up to me. I've never heard of it personally.

Actually digg and stumble upon are really nice ways to get traffic. But, in digg, u need to fight your way to popularity and only tech related stuff "survives" the battle.

Well, stumble upon is different. Its a must have tool for every surfer. I've been using it for almost 3 months now and I'm quite addicted to it. Nice and streamlined toolbar will low resource usage.

Anyway, whenever u create an article, go and click "I Like it" on the stumble upon toolbar and maybe traffic will flow in. Maybe !!. It works for me though.

I'm not big on that stumbleupon.com toolbar.

Yes, it sends a LOT of traffic. Like an insane amount for any toolbar (one Saturday, it sent over 1000 visitors to a site I worked on.) And we all want traffic.

The problem is that it tends to be "drive-through" traffic. I can always tell when stumbleupon is sending visitors to my site because my stats go through the roof, except for my GAS clickthroughs.

Nothing like seeing 2,000 pageviews and 0 clicks on the ads. (It happened once.)

Yeah that is a concern Adam. Traffic is good, But it ends up costing you if this traffic doesn't convert.

Whenever i get a spike in traffic i ignor the spike and wait to look what happens to my traffic when the spike has gone, You can get an idea of how many of them people bookmarked the site or subscribed to a feed.

I have been watching a number of other webmaster and seo related forums where Digg, StumbleUpon and del.icio.us are being discussed heavily. As stated in the earlier post by Astrojith, Digg is focused more on tech. Also, there is no getting around the need for quality content to get people returning to your site. That being said, there are some techniques that are drawing interest for initial visits to a site.

On some of the other forums people are suggesting the use of the SU (StubleUpon) toolbar especially for Mozilla browsers (e.g. Firefox) to make it easier to "thumbs up" and place tags for the site. Usually, the requests are along the lines of: If you like any of my sites, please stumble and respond on the thread. I will then return the favor.

This usually results in a rather lengthy thread with some good and several lesser quality sites involved. While the sites are on the "new" portion of SU they get the initial rush of visitors (as described in earlier posts within this thread) when then settle in afterwards to the "normal". It can assist in getting the search engines to find and rate the site while also getting attention. The rest is up to how good the site is and whether or not people will continue to visit.

Some of the sites I have personally used in this type of activity include:
http://www.libertylogos.com
http://www.coastalgold.com
http://sneadsferrynorthcarolina.blogspot.com
http://www.visitwashingtonnc.com

If you are interested in Stumbling, please feel free to stumble any of the above and/or those in my signature block. I will gladly look over those responding to this post to do the same.

That's part of the weird thing about it.

In my case, I hadn't even heard of the SU toolbar until after seeing the initial spike in my traffic (1000 requests over a 14-hour period). And it hasn't stopped since.

I haven't downloaded the toolbar, participated in any of those discussions, nor have I done anything else to encourage the traffic. I just got it at random.

It's also created a certain skew in my traffic logs because many of the users, as you pointed out, are FF users. For a long time there, FF was the more dominant browser on the affected site (into the 60% range, briefly.) That's way off the beaten path for the site in question (usually between 25-30%).

The same sort of thing goes with digg and particularly del.icio.us. SEFL is bookmarked in at least 20 people's public bookmarks that I know about and I never asked (although I did the first one myself to see what the site was about.)

It's one of those concepts that "right now" is pretty good but "6 months from now" will be abused and ruined by SEOidiots who insist on finding the shortcut to quality traffic.

I'm not sure what will happen "6 months from now" and I don't consider myself one of the "SEOidiots" ... I do know that new sites fight to obtain traffic and the latest Google algo makes it even more of a challenge.

Not all websites are about news nor are they all about ultra popular topics. It is these sites that may need an extra "boost" to get in the public eye and/or be found for the niche that makes the web a unique marketing option. IMHO.

I'm glad for you that you had the good fortune to be found and visited without having to go through the effort others have needed. That does not happen for everyone.

The more people who click "i like it" the more people SU send there.
When people stop clicking "i like it" they stop sending too much traffic there.

Go to http://www.stumbleupon.com and download/install the toolbar. This places the "thumbs up/thumbs down" on the toolbar where you can visit different sites, including your own, to give it the thumbs up. Then get others to do the same and you start getting more interest... It does help to have friends on SU that will get to see what you have "stumbled upon"...

Best of luck!

seokumar this isn't really a technique. You just create good content that other people think is worthy of sharing. You can add buttons or links to make it easy for people to add your page to some of the sites mentioned, but this isn't any kind of quick fix seo tactic.

Thanks for the link Miguel. Stuntdubl is a good blog in general to read to learn seo. I'm not sure how effective it will be to always bookmark your own site at del.icio.us. I think it would in time be obvious that it's your own site being bookmarked and thus the recommendation wouldn't carry so much weight. It's probably fine to mix in some of your own pages with others. And if you're having success then don't listen to me.

I think with all social networking kinds of sites like the ones mentioned, and even this and other forums, is to become part of the community. Spend some time with the community and see how it works. Then do what you can to become a valuable member to that community.

If you come to a forum like this and right from the start post links to your site it's clear your only motivation is to promote yourself and not to help the community. Those links won't get clicked too often. If instead you post on the forum to help others then when you do post a link more people will be willing to take a look.

I think the situtation is the same for the things like digg, del.icio.us, and Stumble Upon. Become an active and valubale member of those communities. The more you put in to making them better, the more they will likely help you as well.

Adam I think the reason you've gotten so many stumbles is because when people have found your pages they've given them the thumbs up. You're suffering from actually having creating some useful content. It's surprising to have gotten that many stumbles and not gotten any clicks or much of anything else useful from the visits, but at least know the stumblers out there think your site is a good one and are happy to recommend it.

I like how del.icio.us tell you how many other people have bookmarked that page too.
It gives you an idea about what types on content people are liking on your sites, Which helps you create more of it.

It definately helps to give people a button to click to submit or save pages. Without the button people are far less likely to copy the url, Go to del.icio.us, Login and save the link. If you have a blogger blog i posted the code i use to display social bookmarking buttons on a blogger blog in a post. If you use a different blog software i'm sure you can figure out what parts to change.
