Andrew I think a good place to start is right here on the forums. Read through some of the posts here since there's a lot of good advice within. Remember that you don't build a successful site overnight. Look past the quick fix suggestions since most if not all won't help.
Learn what you can about seo and marketing in general and apply what you've learned to your site. It really comes down to some basic principles and a lot of hard work.
Here's a tutorial I wrote on SEO basics. Hopefully that will also help get you started. And always feel free to ask specific questions here. It's hard to answer general questions sometimes, but we can usually help with some specific ones.
Mostly to get started it's a good idea to read and learn what you can. There's both good and bad information online, but if you realize that marketing your site isn't about quick fixes a lot of the misinformation becomes easier to spot.
