RSS is actually a very good way to gain readers. It makes it easy for people to know when you've updated your content. When you say you went from 38 readers to 9 do you mean that's how many people visited the blog on those days?
If so that's not how many people are subscribing to your blog. It's quite possible that not everyone from the first day came back the second day. They may still be readers, but only read once a week.
RSS though does help your content spread further and will only attract more readers. I subscribe to far too many blogs as it is and because of rss I can check to see when they've updated and check the summary to decide if I want to read any given post. I wouldn't just visit all those sites though just to see if they had updated.
There are also ways to place an add in your feed. Feedvertising is one way, though I think there may be other options. One thing about monetizing your content or feeds is it isn't always about trying to squeeze as much profit out of every single post. Sometimes if you try to maximize what you make on every single transaction you end up losing out on the overall.
Also with feeds you can set your blog to only deliver partial content so people would still need to come to your site to read the complete article. You should also embed links to your other pages directly in your content.
