Hi , i have a successful .co.uk e-commerce site and i want to marklet my site in other countries. I have read on other sites ( matt cutts , danny sullivan etc) that translating the site into the locakl language and putting it onto the top level domain of that country is ok and we wont incur any duplicate penalties i.e trasnlate site ionto german onto a .de domain and there'll be no penalties. But......what about putting site onto .com , .com.au & .ie domains. if i was to replicate site exactly on these domains would we incur duplicate penalty issues. We want to market the products overseas and display prices etc in local currency and also we want to establ;ish a presence the local search engines of that country i.e google.ie or google.com , google.com.au. Doe s any one have any help ?

I can offer a piece of advice that would help you from both a user and an SEO standpoint.

Basically, what I'd suggest you do if you target those markets is to do two things:

1) Only list those products available in those markets.
2) Try to localize your copy for those markets specifically, and work in words or phrases that will appeal to people in them. For example, city names might work...maybe phrases like "crikey!" in Australia...stuff like that.

In other words, present them with modified copy based on their region. It's more work, but if you make them sound different enough, you'll avoid any of these issues to begin with.

Those are actually the sites I was referring to.

Australian English differs from Irish English differs from American English differs from Canadian English, eh? Take off, you knob! What's that aboot?

In other words, try to write your copy in terms of the regional dialects if you can.
