Organic Search vs. Paid/Sponsored Listings
What's at the heart of every search engine pertaining to algorithm?
Explain the difference between Indexing and Retrieval - which has more weight with SE's?
There's now 3.5 Search Engines - we know who the Big3 are - who's the .5?
Important Tasks of the SEO Practitioner - explain each of these; of how you tackle each one per client:- Objectives and budgets.
- Clarify the business model.
- Domain name recommendations.
- Page names and file/directory names.
- Deciding page titles; headers; and sub-headers.
- Keyword research and analysis.
- Content optimization.
- Internal linking structure development.
- Working with meta tags.
- 301 Redirects and robots.txt files.
- Monitoring site and term rankings.
- Monitoring site indexation.
- Creating strategies increasing the Link Profile.
- Monitoring the latest search industry news.
SEO is considered a 'controlled organic campaign' - explain that.
Lastly; what's the most important item for an SEO to look at in every search engine that dictates what a Webmaster can do in optimizing a page, and what they can't do without incurring the wrath of the search engine, up to and including having your site permanently removed from the index?

I'm not asking you to prove anything publicly -- merely asking SEO questions, like many more ask you everyday ... SEO's would know the answers to my questions very quickly and wouldn't hesitate answering.

Whew - you misunderstood, as it's not a charade to destroy anyone ... if I'm paying you $75+, I'd be asking you these same questions just to make sure I'm getting my money's worth for what an SEO advertises or states.
So, if you know the answers, why don't you answer them?

Read From Here Down
Sorry to bring this post up from the past, but I think I need to repair my rep here and this is where to start I sent this to travel agent in a pm as well
Here are the questions answered to the best of my ability.
Quote:
I will say right now, I do not know the answer to all of these and I never claimed that I did. But as I am trying to change I thought I would PM you as you seem to be the one person who everybody looks up to
So let me try my best to answer these questions. I'm sure some will be wrong but I do get websites ranked so I am not entirely sure its needed to know them all
Question: Objectives and budgets.
Answer: Here is how I would introduce myself to a potential client Hello Client, Thank you for taking the time to read my email. I will try to make my email as quick as possible so you wont waste any of your time. I am Shannon Lilly, a SEO Specialist at www.theseokit.com I took a look at your website www.whateveritis.com and have some thoughts and Ideas on what should be done to help improve ranking for your business main keyword, list keyword here. If you are interested in ranking well in the search engines for that keyword, or another ( Please List ) I would be happy to provide you with a free estimate on the amount of time it would take us to get your page content, and off site factors in line for proper SEO. Please let me know if I can be of service at thrillride3d@gmail.com or phone 210-287-1040
Question: Clarify the business model.
Answer: Not real sure what you meant by this, please elaborate more. Thanks.
Question: Domain name recommendations.
Answer: I do not recommend a different domain name to them unless they bring up the subject. The domain name has no value in my experience and I rank higher then sites with the keyword in their domain.
Question: Page names and file/directory names.
Answer: If their site is not already done correctly, I do recommend to them that a file structure should have correct naming with -'s in them like seo-talk/seo-talk.html This gives the search engines another referral to the term seo talk.
Question: Deciding page titles; headers; and sub-headers.
Answer: After we decide on at least 3-4 main keywords that they want to target, I create the meta tags according to several tools on the Internet, with those tools I get sites ranked so I think they work pretty well. ( Would Love To Know What You Do TravelAgent)
Question: Keyword research and analysis.
Answer: I would have done this as one of the first things myself. But I use several tools to research the popularity of each keyword and the actual searches done. Keyword discovery to name one.
Question: Content optimization.
Answer: This would have already been done as well ( as mentioned above ) The optimization of the content is pretty standard. I make sure its keyword density is not to high by just reading it and seeing how many times and variations it is mentioned. If its not already their I also ask if they would like to put a few miss spells in the content as most don't read everything. That way they could rank for keywords when they are typed in wrong.
Question: Internal linking structure development.
Answer: I ensure that each site has anchor text pointing throughout the rest of the site.
Question: 301 Redirects and robots.txt files.
Answer: I never had to use a 301 redirect, but I also tell my clients that using a robots file is like trying to tell a mad person to cool down. It just doesn't work and makes it more angry
Question: Monitoring site and term rankings.
Answer: Generally I keep track of the sites but they do have access to all the tools to such trucking's.
Question: Monitoring site indexation.
Answer: Before I start doing the SEO, and internal linking I make sure that I take a screen grab from google of the amount of pages their site currently has indexed. Then I show them how site:yoururl.com in google to see how many pages are now indexed.
Question: Creating strategies increasing the Link Profile.
Answer: I inform them about the importance of linking. The difference between a pr 5 and a pr 1 link, directory submissions, organic links etc... I send them a small guide so they know. The Guide is also the SEO Ebook I sell
Question: Monitoring the latest search industry news.
Answer: Not sure I know what you are asking?
Thanks for looking TravelAgent

travelagent, you rock buddy. Seriously, dude, this is brilliant!
And it only took him one answer to screw it up:

The problem with this answer, for those who do not know, is that it requires Shannon to make the initial client contact (i.e. to send an unsolicited commercial email, or SPAM, to the prospect). No SEO worth his/her salt would ever have to do that, as that SEO would be drawing enough business from search engines themselves not to have to (this doesn't even take into account board/forum/other online referrals and any offline efforts the SEO might have used).
If you have to cold-solicit your own services, then you're not marketing effectively enough... especially in the field of SEO.
I didn't even bother to read the rest of the answers after this...I didn't have to. No one else should either.
Oh, and theseokit: thanks for opening up a two-month old dead thread that even the OP probably forgot about.

No you wouldn't! You still don't get this!
If you were half as good as you say you were, you wouldn't need to tell anyone on here and you sure wouldn't have to cold-solicit anyone. The best SEOs, or even the best Tier 2s, don't have to bother. They've already got the business that they need.

Exactly, I don't have the business I want therefor I go ahead and contact people. Is that a crime I did not know about?
I know your not going to tell me you have never emailed or called someone about something that they could have found that may have been better then what you were offering on the net.
Everyone has done it, its a great way to market, if they are not interested they do not reply. What is so wrong with that concept?
PS, if that method did not work, then why do companies call you out of the clear blue to tell you about their weeks specials?

Ummm...no, I haven't emailed or called anyone about something they found that may have been better than what I was offering. Why would I tell a customer to go look for something better (assuming it even existed)? This is asinine.
Now...assuming that you mean that I contact people because I think I can do better, no, I never have emailed or called anyone to introduce myself. Never have, never will. Never telemarketed, never will.
Not everyone has done it, and a number of us find it very annoying and inconvenient. Why do you think spam filters even exist in the first place? Or those telezapper devices? Or number blocking/filtering (thank you Primus TalkBroadband)? IT'S NUISANCE MARKETING.
It may "work"...I don't doubt it does, in theory. So does selling drugs in a back alley. Just because something "works" doesn't mean it's right.

Adam, as I said I am not wanting to start a arguement, perhaps my methods are different from yours. But until I have a steady flow of income doing SEO what should I do then. Please tell me how I should go about this.

Oh seokit, you just keep digging yourself deeper and deeper. I understand what you are trying to say, but you have to think that emailing people your seo services is just not good. I get those emails all the time and I am not an SEO. When i see their sites and work, I laugh because most of them suck and the only way they can contact people is through spam. If you are better than them, then show it by increasing marketing through alternate methods.

Well I want to do that, but that is my question. What other methods are their. Its impossible for me to rank #1 on SEO as its such a big market. I rank number 3-5 with www.cedhslp.org for SEO Consultation.

Bwahahahaha -- anyone "claiming" to "allegedly" know SEO would know the available methods; and from all of your jibberish about your alleged SEO experience/knowledge, I certainly can't see you ranked as the #1 SEO on the Internet!
The SEO's I know are far more knowledgeable than you, and don't stoop to such low methods you incorporate.

Obviously Shannon doesn't like TravelAgent busting her "eggs," but the questions at the beginning of this thread are very good ones. In fact, Travel's post is really a fantastic checklist for anyone wanting to learn SEO to read through, and figure out what needs to be learned about. The system tells me I need to spread more TP around before giving some to Mr Agent again, but I think a lot of us can learn a great deal from trying to answer these questions. If the thread had played out a different way, I would have suggested "stickying" it.
