I believe in evolution, so I have to say the egg came before the chicken. Whatever laid the egg was almost a chicken, but genetically distinct, and their egg is a mutation, the first chicken. Of course, the mutation was probably caused by something in the almost-chicken diet, because lots of other almost chicken creatures laid eggs that had the same mutation, otherwise it wouldn't take hold of the population.

And VanGogh is right - this has more to do with SEO than PageRank versus Traffic.

Guess that means that the McMuffin answer is wrong.

The McMuffin is an acceptable answer, but since this is an seo thread it's important to remember that not all McMuffins are created equal. Depending on the topic of your site bacon may be the proper modifier, but for some sites ham or even sausage will provide the most orange juice.

And of course it may also be very important to vary your McMuffin meat at times. Even if your site is bacon related it's more natural to have ham every so often.

Coffee of course is optional, very hot, and could lead to burnt thighs and lawsuits. It's the black hat side of the equation and you should make sure you know what you're doing before driving with a cup between your legs.

I think you should prioritize to get more traffic than getting high PR. You don't need to bother yourself about getting high PR, quality traffic is more important. You can gain more traffic if you have more quality links and good SERP.

Ok if you want a serious answer then I would choose traffic over PR if only because it's one step closer to a conversion.

Janna is right that quality traffic is more important than PR. Think about it for a second. Why do you want the PR in the first place? Without getting into a debate about the value of PR (which I'll accept as having value only for the sake of this argument) you'd want PR because you think it will lead to improved SERPs and thus more traffic. So if the goal of the PR is to gain more traffic than why would it be better than the traffic itself.

Yes I know some people think having high PR is valuable so you can sell a site or links. If you do find people willing to pay you money solely because your site has PR please have them PM me. I own a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to lease to them.

The problem with this question in general though is that it assumes PR and traffic are end goals. Neither should be your end goal. If you have a PR10 site and get no traffic then what's the point. If you get 10,000 visitors a day and no one buys anything or signs up for anything or clicks an add or converts in any other way what was the point.

All that either of the above scenarios would do is indicate you have some serious problems with your site somewhere.

The main point though is that neither PR nor traffic should be your end goal. I'll accept traffic as a goal if you've yet to monetize your site and plan on advertising after you've generated consistent repeat traffic or if you have no intention of ever monetizing and are just looking for readers.

PR though is never an end goal.
