The advantages to joining Google Groups are the same as those of joining any other public forum...the open exchange of information, ideas, and concepts. It's not meant as an advertising vehicle (although you can if you like.)
It's a very effecient way to collect spam. If you ever feel lonely, posting to Google Groups will fill your inbox with love. Just make sure and wash your hands afterwards.
