Does page rank really effect web position? Does it matter? Or would it be safe to say that a combination of page rank and good content benefit overall rankings.

PageRank is a factor, but there are over 100 (I believe between 150-200).

Basically, the thing you want to do is build a site for your users, make sure that a search engine can crawl it and easily determine what your content is about, and you've already solved 80% of your problems.

Ok here is an odd ball question. Would linking to a site that has higher page rank than mine help my position?

I have had people decline me linking on their sites because I was a page rank 3 and not page rank 1

I swear, the more I read and the more questions I ask the more confusing it gets.

Thanks for the help.

Argh. In the '90s, stupidity was a barrier to having a web site, but not anymore. This proves those days are long gone.

You don't need a web site owner's permission to link to them. I can link to Tim Leary's web site even though he's dead, and I can link to BBC even though they won't answer my emails. If it's on the web, it can be linked to - that's the law and the culture.

So let them. If they did, it wouldn't help you anyway.

Assessing sites based on PR means they're not paying attention.to your site and wouldn't likely send you any real traffic anyway.

Sydpix the situation is just like Adam described it in his initial post. PR is in there somewhere. At one time it was most everything, but over time and after it began to get manipulated the effect of PageRank has been lessened.

The best thing to do with PR is not worry about it. What you see in the toolbar is updated roughly every 3 months so it's mostly out of date. And no one really knows how much of a part it may or may not play.

The most important thing is to build a good site. If you do that you've already won half the battle. Then you want to get other sites to link to yours. Ideally they'll link to you because your content is just that good, but more likely you need to give it something of a push.

Well, the reason why a lot of people think that PR is everything is because it is a value everyone can see. If you rank well for a search term, there is no quantitive value to show for it.

I think page rank has no effect in web position. Even the site has PR0 it can get high ranking if you do effective optimization on your site.

for me there is an effect, it would help you to determine the effectiveness of a particular page. which is not and which is effective for all your pages. because if am not mistaken PR is a measurement of importance of a page. cheers

Page Rank is a ranking factor in Google. But the chances of PR coming into play while determining your ranking is very very less.

Moreover, the PR which we see in the toolbar is the ToolBaar PR and NOT the actual PR. An actual PR of 3.1 and 3.3 will show the same PR of 3. But there is a difference.

Now let's take an example: abc.com and xyz.com both have the same ranking factors (which is IMPOSSIBLE) . In such a case the site with a higher PR will rank higher than the other in the SERP.

So my advice would be to focus on the content and the links of your site. make your site more and more user-friendly. After all there's so much to care about other than PR which matters so li'l in site rankings.

Page rank affect the web position. Yah your right , google evaluated for page rank if the site has quality backlinks and of course good and quality content would benefit the ranking. I think good content is the first to be seen and evaluated to the site not the design, it is the first thing to see when surfing the site.

I think PR has nothing to do with SERP? There are millions of website with high PR that doesn't show up on first page.

No it's not! Publish both sites on the same day, submit them to the same web directories, and you'llg et the same PR.

In general you will want to have a PR of at least 4. 8 is really the highest practical goal.

IMO, i can't say that it does not matter, because you can use PR when exchanging links with good quality sites.

PR matters but it is not the most important thing, what really is important is rank high in SERPs.

Sites that exchange links based on PR probably aren't exchanging high quality links. I think what really matters is the ultimate conversion you want to get on your site. It might be a sale or someone signing up for a newsletter or someone subscribing to your blog or giving you a call about services, etc.

If my site ranked #1 for every phrase I'm targeting and the search engines sent hundreds of thousands of visitors to my site who all instantly clicked their back button then my site had an unsuccessful day.

If a page on my site ranked #22 for a low competitive phrase, but because that phase was well targeted it led to that person exploring my site and ultimately giving me a call to hire me for one of my services then my site had a very successful day.

apthost could you explain why it's important to have at least a PR of 4. Many pages with lower PR rank very well and bring traffic and convert.

Again PR is in their somewhere, but if your focus with seo is to increase PR then you've already failed.
