Sure, it's stunningly easy. Just create good content that people will naturally want to link to. That's all it takes, and it's much less time consuming than other alternatives, which don't work anywhere near as well.

What Forrest said. Build something that's compelling, unique, and has content that people can actually use on some level and they'll come back.

Build up your incoming links and quality content. The more backlinks from high page rank is the chances of getting high page rank.

Hi , in all truth you can be no1 on google etc, and stay there with no links and no content at all, and pagerank means nothing really,

all you need to be is,, unique.

failing that, your domain name is a big point, your <title>, if it also carries your domain words, double bonus, then again in <h1> and try not to have too many broken links and hey presto no1,

i cant leave a link because im a noob,
but if you google "free computer scripts" i out rank hotscripts.com with one site i have, and have done for months, no content, no links, no mucking about, just be unique,

and before anyone says, o yes but no one will look up those words, its well into the top 1 mil on alexa, thanks,

ps no links... at all + (Unique) = no1

While I agree unique content is the way to go, some do not want to wait for the site to be built up. In that case getting relative back links is the key

Content is king my friend. Original, authoratative content has absolutely no substitute.

The idea however is not simply to be indexed by Google via content, but to build a good amount of traffic. First page ranking and consistent traffic don't necessarily go hand-in-hand. While I can't say I'll ever demote content to a second-place level of importance as far as SEO goes, with the advent of social networks, social bookmarketing and the whole Web 2.0. experience, content isn't enough.

How about YouTube? I'm surprised so few major (and even minor) companies have taken advantage of video sharing. Post some videos on your site! Anything! Everything! A commerical, a how-to, a video blog, something...get tagged, start a YouTube channel and get linked. Users who search for, say, "Coconuts" will defintiely see your site up there.

Google own YouTube - you don't think they're going to rank that content as high as possible? Organic search isn't as natural as we'd like to think.

Content is great for sure, but you can have a thousand page site of great content and Google might not touch it for a year or more when it comes to ranking. Yes, you will get a new site bonus and maybe rank for a few weeks and then disappear for what seems to be ever.

Get some links. Make posts on forums, blogs, photo sites, trade some links with some friends, how ever you can get them. Links get the ball rolling, and without them it is very tough. Links reduce the amount of time it takes to rank even a good content site.

Like most things in life, it's a matter of balancing content and links; both take time to create. And, like 'Twas said, even after you build a site with fantastic, useful, and unique content, you still need to "announce" it to get the ball rolling.

But the more work you put into your content, the less you'll need to put into link building. I get links in photo sites, forums, blogs, and such, from people who read one of my articles and tried the technique with their photos ... without asking for them, or even knowing they exist. Found one in a Korean forum through Google's Webmaster Tools pointing to a soft focus article I wrote.

That's poor advice about having no links...You won't even get listed with no links.

its a combination or collection of factors to rank high on SE's. good content, back links .... are part of it, but actually lots.

optimized all the keywords in all pages.. in one good source is link build such as promotional ads, bookmarking and link exchange also is good source of good PR.

Improve your contents for your targeted keywords then improve your link popularity and use your targeted keywords as your anchor text....that will help you on ranking on such keywords...
