It can happen when a domain name changes owner.
The "first registered" entry on a whois search will always show the very first time the name was registered, it does not change on ownership changes. Unless the name expired and was re-registered.

Possibly.
However it's more likely the other way around.
The previous owners invested in links etc before the sale to make the site more "valuable", especially to the gullible.
