Sitewide development links - good or bad?

Hi

I am just wondering what others think of web designers adding a back link at the bottom of their clients website.

I've seen a lot of designers have their link on the bottom of every page of the clients site pointing back to their web site with keyworded text. Does this help? Or do the search engines see a back link on every page as spamming?

If a designer can get back links from a clients site, how many pages should they link from is 1 better than 100? what would help improve page ranking for the web designers site? Should the link text be varied?

I look forward to your comments

Kind Regards
Louise

First read the post Chris linked to. I didn't read it all, but I agree with everything I did read.

I would expect that the majority of those links won't amount to anything. They won't hurt, but they won't help as far as search engines are concerned.

Of course not every link has to be there solely for a search engine. When I design a website I always ask if I can place a link to my site. I usually add it in the footer on every page. I'm not really concerned with how a search engine sees the link, but I want it there because who knows which page of a site someone might be on when they wonder who designed the site. I want my link there so someone can find it and click on it at the moment they want to know who designed the site. If it gets any love from a search engine great, but it makes no difference to me how they view the link.

Site wide links are decreasing because most site wides are paid links. These links are being discounted by google. They will not hurt you but they aren't worth the money they used to be worth.

I dont go with sitewides myself, google will generally only index a sitewide as one link and you usually have to do more or pay more for a sitewide

There are thousands of sites with site wide links that are neither paid nor discounted by Google.

This is another odd one

So this means that on the site navigation of every site out there on the internet, out of all the links to all the pages in the same site only one of them counts?

Sitewide links may not help for SEO that much, Or at all (it depends on the site), But if people see the site and like it they may want to use the same designer. So from a business point of view, Having a link back to your site on sites you have designed is a great way of getting business.

Also, Think about having a site wide link on slashdot, bbc.com or digg.
I wouldn't care about SEO at all with the ton of traffic i would be getting.

Not all links are about SEO.

I can't believe that two people really think that if your own site has a fully meshed navigation system (that's one where every page links to every other page), only one link from some page or other will be given "weight" in Googles algo.

dont think that sitewides are discounted... yet.
Had this been the case, G wouldve shown a single link in webmaster central's links page.
