Hi,
I'm quite new to this stuff, kinda just started but been reading about it.
need to ask that.
I have current pr0, but if I link to a PR5 site, (put their link on HP) would that be helpful to getting pr?

Possibly, but if so, it'll be an indirect thing.
PageRank, aside from being a major distraction that really doesn't help web masters, is based on links pointing in to your site, not out. If a lot of your visitors click the link you create, it might have the other webmaster link back to your site. Or, if you have a lot of links pointing to interesting sites, people might decide yours is a good resource and start linking to you. ( That's how Digg and others work became popular. )
Unless the PR5 site is part of what Google calls a spammy neighborhood, they won't care at all about the link pointing out, though.

What Forrest said. Linking out will not increase PageRank. Links in will.
However, PageRank is but one of three digits' worth of factors in the overall equation and it's not something worth obsessing over as most people do.

Oh, now I get it, thanks for the answer peeps.
Only reason I want a PR, is that I can get more link exchange partners
they just don't bother, so..

ANYBODY who thinks a page needs a certain PR before it's worth linking to (or from) really aren't worth getting a link from and certainly aren't worth even considering linking to their page(s)

AdWords technically won't affect your organic optimization. You won't rank better just because you buy ads. I suppose it could indirectly benefit you in the sense that if you buy ads to a good article more people will find the article and possibly link to it.
Think of organic seo and ppc advertising as two different things. It can be good to do well in both though.
I'll also reiterate what Forrest, Adam, and Chris said previously. Don't worry about PR. The toolbar PR you see isn't the real PR used behind the scenes. It's also only one factor among many. People get crazy about it and think it's far more important than it is.
I wouldn't get involved with link exchange partners either. Those kind of exchanges are generally garbage. There's nothing wrong with linking to sites that link back to you. That's very natural, but if you exchange links solely to try to manipulate rank it's pretty obvious to search engines and at best the links won't count for anything. At worst you can associate your site with what's considered 'bad neighborhoods' and the links could hurt.
It's better to build relationships with people. When you do those people will link to you without you having to ask them.

of course it can help you increase your PR... just remember that it is much better to get even few related links rather than many backlinks that's not related to your site..

you will need a link from pr5, not link to pr5.
basically you need to know more about link building and how to get more links to your website. directory submission is good as well.

It's amazing how the TV/DVD crowd doesn't just need to descend on every thread, here and on other forums, but they have to give out horrible advice. In 17 replies, 5 have as much text in the signature links as the advice "itll help go for it" and have TV and DVD signatures. It's like mosquitoes. Nobody minds the links, but why do people insist on giving out advice that would hurt to follow?

To start off, submit your website to directories. They are mostly themed and can help building a number of backlinks for you.
