provocative enough title?

Anyway, all playing the seo game should take a read of this forbes article (print version because video ads are plain evil). You might also take a look at Matt Cutts comments on the same article. Before any crying about it, be sure to read some digg comments on the issue.

The point of this is, many of the techniques often described here are the same that caused that site to land in the supplemental index, as well as the other mentioned in the article. The comments from the diggers should indicate that the users of the search engine are unlikely to give any sympathy.

The big things that caused the problems: duplicate content, emailing for link exchanges, link exchanges, and buying/selling links.
Thing to be aware of, so called SEO experts.

Attaboy, Paul. Way to cover all sides of the equation! Nice work.

Except that you forgot one important aspect: PageRank.

Don't worry though, buddy...I got you covered.

Did I read that right ... a web thug, er, site operator sent out a bunch of cease-and-desist letters to other sites linking to him? You really shouldn't be threatening legal action unless somebody is breaking the law. Is it any wonder the guy couldn't figure out what landed him in or out of the supplemental index?

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that two of the three examples are in the diamond business, but maybe that just means Google is starting to take the "don't be evil" policy seriously?

I think this snippet really has the best advice of the whole set: " use solid white-hat SEO to get high-quality links (e.g. editorially given by other sites on the basis of merit)." Apparently I'm not an expert, because I haven't bought or exchanged any links, but then I'm not running around like a chicken with its head cut off, either, so I'm okay with that.

Agreed. From my own experience, building good links can get pages out of supplemental results in a few days or a couple of weeks. Another things is that if all the title tags are the same, the pages have a good chance indexed to the supplemental results.

What a load of rubbish "SEO may get your site banned" blackhat SEO may get your site banned would be a more accurate statement, the techniques you have mentioned would definitely not get a site banned, penalised maybe but banned no.

Over optimization can get you banned. And I don't think everybody really agrees what "SEO" means. To a lot of people, it means a made for adsense site and buying text links.

Name a site that has been banned for over optimization?

I think people who are blaming SEO"s or web marketers are the one's who haven't tasted success in SEM.............

That's why they drop here for telling their tearful story............

and by the way who says its is all about links......

This is my Advanced Website Marketing Strategy

The Whole Concept!

In todays competitive world, it's not sufficient to limit yourself to standardized offerings. That's why we closely analyze your website before nailing down various online marketing vehicles that will climb up your website in Search Engine Rankings.

How long your website can survive the competition merely with links building?

Now a days you can not survive among search engine rankings by just building links with other websites, but you have to add the power of article syndication and make constant updations in the form of small blog posts or news items that will give stable rankings to your website.

For this reason i recommend dear readers to use this formula for success:

Email Marketing + Web 2.0 Marketing (creating blogs etc)+ Social Marketing + Quality On page Work + Link Building Campaign + Articles Syndication/Regular Content Updations = Top Search Engine Rankings

Variety Rules so add variety in your marketing vehicles........

BBye

It also helps to know how to read, write, and spell. (Anyone who uses "updations" has no idea what the heck he's talking about).

This is nothing more than a faux recipe designed to spam every major form of traffic building out there and thus dilute the efforts of those who use each of them legitimately (although to be fair, not many people use the last two legitimately at all these days).

That's exactly why they were banned. That's "over" optimization as far as I'm concerned. They overstuffed the noscript tags.

OK. We both agree that hiding content from users to game the search engines might get you banned. We just disagree on what we call it.

I guess the title was chosen to draw more attention to the article. Google's policy mentioned hasn't changed: beeing in suplemental results isn't punishment, but to get out of there you should doublecheck your links and get rid of some of them.

*Chief Wiggum mode* That's some nice indignation!

You have also managed to completely miss the point. If one is going to attempt to market using a written medium in a specific language, one must first be able to write effectively and correctly in that language. Spelling and grammatical errors create lost revenue streams due to the number of people who will notice said errors.

You, my friend, cannot communicate effectively in the English language. It really doesn't matter whether you're Indian or Tamil or Chinese or Slavic or Canadian or American or (insert nationality/ethnic background here). You cannot communicate effectively.

It also doesn't matter whether I can communicate in a language other than English, since I'm not trying to market myself and anything I offer in a second language (but if you must know, I can communicate in French).

I'm not picking on your grammar and spelling for the sheer sake of picking on your grammar and spelling. I'm pointing out that your lack of understanding of the English language would render your formula a lot less effective than it would appear at face value, thus necessitating the addition of a number of elements in that formula ("social marketing", for example...the next thing SEO wannabes will ruin completely) that would otherwise occur organically.

In other words, the fact that you can't read, write and spell indicates that you need to work a lot harder and waste more time than someone who can. That's not me looking at the dark side, either; that's me stripping any subjective criteria away from the equation.
