Forget tools. Just write something really, really good about something you are passionate about and then promote it. Or create something really useful and do the same.

Here are my favorite SEO tools:

www.marketleap.com/publinkpop
http://inventory.overture.com
http://www.seomoz.org/page_strength/
www.xml-sitemaps.com

If you are just starting I would use Wordpress, register with technorati, register with other social bookmarking sites like Netscape and Stumbleupon and write interesting articles.

As gringo said, it doesn't take much to SEO a blog. Quality content is the biggest step...if you can nail that, you'll pick up a lot of decent keywords and phrases regardless of the age of your blog, PageRank, link exchanges, and other silly pet tricks (before the TVAddicts "posters" come in and tell you to get more links and improve your PR).

The hardest thing to do is to come up with topics and viewpoints that are different from everyone else's. But that should be your goal...be individual. Be unique. Be different. Different attracts people. And be real. Real recognizes real, and real keeps people.

Oh, and stay away from John Chow (I looked at your blog). Anything to do with him is just asking for trouble.

In line with what Adam said - it's not about SEO, PR, PMS or any other 'nym - it's about traffic. If you have info others want to read about, the traffic will come.. (build it and they will come? - ouch)

If you want more hits to your website try using auto surfer programs, it is not he best but sure helps. There are different websites like < removed > etc.

You know, I just don't get any search traffic at all on my blog. And I think I have better content than most, and even better quality writing, too!

I have nine tools I use for SEO. The only one I don't use is my left thumb.

There are tons of articles, blogs, e-books you can read to learn about SEO.
As far as I know, SEO is not a topic you can study in your school. You have to learn it yourself.
