In theory, though, search bots read text and even markup, but ignore what's inside a graphic file. You can have a rollover background for some kind of text tag and it's okay for the SEs but if you type some text into photoshop and then even put it into alt="the text you typed into photoshop" then you won't get much credit for it.

Off topic rant, but "search engine friendly" is a strange term. Bots aren't like Santa, you don't have to leave them milk and cookies. You want friendliness from the search engines, not the other way around. They're just going to read your code and be done with it. It's like trying to flirting with the hot girl who doesn't know you exist, and ignores you. What you really want is to be The Fonz and have her fawn all over you.

I don't have a better term, though, so we now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

depends on the code you are using. If you use CSS to create the roll-over there shouldn't be any problems. If you use javascript or dhtml it won't be search engine friendly. Checkout suckerfish menus for friendly search engine css menus.

For SEO, any text on your menu buttons should be text in your htmlso that the SEs can read it. Use graphics as background images to the text.
