First and foremost, make sure your site has fresh relevent content. Build your site around it's content, not the content around the site or the content around your adsense.

Good page titles
Relevant links that bring traffic and get your site spidered regularly

and remember.. don't depend only on high rankings for your traffic

well SEO is all about building a quality website having authentic & original content, good navigation, perfect internal & external optimization, perfect keyword use in title, meta tags, headings & sub-headings, getting reciprocal links thru relevant/main keyword embeded anchor text etc etc etc...

- choose effective keywords
- target your website as per your nich keywords
- use your selected keyword phrases & its synonym in title, meta tag, <h1> & <h2> tags and in anchors
- have a perfect navigation on your website
- inject original, relevant & quality content
- refresh your content asap
- increase your TARGETED traffic segment etc

I think the first and the most important step is having relevent content. 2nd step is getting backlinks from common content sites. 3rd step is update your site often.
