Ideas for generating traffic!

Hi Guys,
I have read that if you give people something on your website it will make them want to return. I am going to create some basic tutorials and PHP scripts on my personal site and use google adsense and things like that (As it is a personal site it wont look unproffesional like on a company site).
Hopefully over a matter of time (Rome wasnt built in a day) after advertising the *** off my personal site I can link to my company site on there and it will help that generate hits.
I have put a link to my site in each of the URL scripts and "hopefully" the basic users will not get rid of these so it will help the spiders come back to my site by having a link on their page where they have used my script.
Is this a good idea or am I wasting my time?

It's a good idea, but you should put it into the license if you're distributing free programming source code, that people must leave a link to your domain. I think that will help more with general SEO than with traffic, as I don't really see many people clicking links that say "Menu by Nick" or something like it.
Also, people who come to your site for tech reasons, mainly for free PHP scripts, probably aren't going to click any Adsense ads.

Yeah I guess they won't click on anything if they know what it is but I guess people who are VERY basic with photoshop may see a link saying "free photoshop" and click on it but I guess it is all down to pot luck.
I guess I could put a license file in BUT is there any way I can check who has installed it?
They are only going to be basic scripts like form mail and web stats, just something small to keep people coming back, have thought about a couple of the best flash games too!
(It is not a serious site just something I can mess about with)

The normal way people approach AdSense revenue is to get more traffic, assuming some % will click. But I think the smarter people get about how the web works, and people looking for server code are pretty up there, the less they're going to click ads.
A bunch of small freebies, especially in a trickling stream with maybe a new one every other day, is a good way to keep people coming back, though. And if they're good, it will do some SEO work for you as people say "Hey I got this script from http://www.example.com and has anybody tried making it " and then whatever the actual question is.

Yeah I understand what you mean.
Even if I just get the spiders looking at my URL from their sites / scripts I will be happy and I am not entirelly based upon PHP Scripts.
I am planning to just add random things on there that interest me like my own intranet if you like.
Do you think it is worth making a newsletter for when I add something new to my site? I understand this works with RSS but you can never have enough?

nick - I like your site, the web design one that is - but please don't take this the wrong way - do something with your title tag - it could help you in the long run - it is the one that Google likes best.
But I guess you will be getting to that as the site is perhaps just up. Best of luck.

Sorry I can't send PM not enough posts yet - but will be there soon I hope. I would change your title tag to something like - Web Designer Midlands, Web Sites in (whatever town you target) by Smarter WebDesign - the why of this is that the text that is in your title counts more than text anywhere else on the page, so use it. I have a few post on a blog about some of this and do some searching and look here at link building and seo blogs. Hope some of this helps. Oh yeah my blog is at http://cwwd.org/hp_wordpress and I always use my blogs to bounce my sites, so I would go with you on that one. off for the night.

A good way to generate traffic as well as high quality 1-way link is Article Submission, but the article you are submitting should be related to the content of your site.
Good article submission sites are ezinearticle,seoarticles4u etc.
you can check the benefit of article submission from site seo-bloggersplace.org and can also download free tool which can submit your articles to arround 700 directories free of cost.

creating scripts and templates with your link at the footer will help you get backlinks and that will give you traffic. Most of the people who use installable scripts don't know how to modify them so your link should be okay

Yes links, are often a good way to either generate traffic/page rank/google rank. Make sure that your content is unqiue as well as fresh. This also helps you gain rankings faster, I wouldn't worry about each indiviaul who is comming to your site, and expect them to come back , you need to get some solid key search pharses so that you are having steady traffic and you won't have to scare the few people that are comming into staying for life.

Good but try speaking to other forum members or friends from other countries to try your site then help them spread your message.

One other way is generating auto traffic to your website. This is not the most effective way but still a way. If you are interested there are different websites online which offer there services. Some charge and some are free.
If interested you can visit < self promo link removed >

There are methods in building traffic, but the best ways to get traffic is from the search engines, PPCs, networking sites, and most of all, advertisements.

Nick, I think you are on the right path with creating tutorials.
The tutorials on my site generate pretty steady traffic. When I add new ones, they tend to get found without any extra effort. No single one gets a huge amount off traffic but, it does appear to be cumulative.
A few get several hundred hits per day, and according to google analytics a majority also visit other pages.
Take to heart, the comments by John. I make squat on ads for the amount of traffic I get. I get around one ad click for every 200 visitors. (Note, I've recently replaced my standard side bar ad with a donation link; it will switch back soon)

Actually, Nick, if you would you're in a position to take suggestions, I would suggest that you should make a tutorial with practical examples. I mean, a tutorial with applications and examples emphasized. Here's the reason.
I know PHP. I mean, I know the syntax. I learned it from a "best seller" book. But the problem is, I still can't use it. Because, that book(most) was too much theory-based that I don't have any idea about application. Please consider this.
