Hi,
I have a very old website & have a good result on search engines, Now I am changning its designing.

My old website is running also on old domain, for new designing i am doing its testing on another domain, after testing new one will be hosted on old domain server.

Let me suggest should i stop the crawler on testing server, also suggest other techniques while changing the whole designing of a old website so that website ranking should not be affected.

Thanks,
Rishi

Keep your directory structure and page names in tact and you won't loose any progress with search results.
A redesign can actually be good for search engines because they see that you are changing thins and keeping everything up to date

When it comes to design, if possible separate the design layout and content. Meaning you have a separate files for each. When you change the layout, it will not affect the content and vice versa. Good for maintainability!

Why would you want a test site crawled? It's a test site. If it gets crawled and ranked for something, you can't do anything with the traffic.

Test the site thoroughly, and when you move it to the old domain server, make sure you 301 the old pages to their newer equivalents.

If you are going to be changing your whole site around, you can expect to be losing a large number of rankings if not all of them. Keep finding great ways to bring traffic these "tests" are the best kind of way to do this find out what works and stick to it. ..GL

Yes its a good idea to change your old website everyone need new things so why not website but dont change your url structure in new website and tell robots about changing / upgrading for a website so they visit again to see newer content, if your website ranking affected due to new design it will be covered in some days.

Please note down some point for your new website

1. Content is king
2. Use keyword in content but it should be as content
3. Use H1 H2 Tags.
4. Use Robots.txt.
