I have a client with a large budget for promoting his business website. I typically stick with taking the time involved rather than waving around money and have yet to deal with sponsored links to the main search engines. However, he wishes to be listed in the sponsored links. I spoke with AT&T for their national plan which will list them as sponsored links in 12 major search engines it was nearly $5,000 a month, which is within his budget. The monthly fee is flat rate and they guarantee 9000 clicks a year. Can anyone offer some good advice as to whether this is a good idea or offer a better idea? The company's base is overseas so the local listings included in the plan are not even necessary. Thank you!

12 major search engines eh?
wonder what the other 9 are?
$5,000 per month will buy a LOT of Adwords which will probably bring in FAR more business and make a lot more sales.

PC Catastrophe, I want to thank you for making this post. I thought this was only being offered to clients of mine in Canada, and as it turns out, they're being marketed by other phone companies worldwide.
Besides the point Chris Hirst made, the campaign isn't as attractive as it appears to be. Simply put, they're using annual traffic to make a monthly fee more attractive.

5000 dollars will buy you alot more clicks than 9000 with a well run adwords campaign also the traffic will convert alot better if you run it correctly. I dont know what keywords your client would advertise for but as long as your landing page is ok-great quality .50 cpc would get you a top position bringing in 10k clicks. And thats not even considering the cheaper clicks from the content network.
If you were the client with $5k Id suggest letting a search engine marketing company like RedFLY handle your campaign

5,000$ a month could be better spent, sending people out doing anchor text
Beause PR+Page Rank+back link= all good.

Brandy I have to agree with everyone else. I think you can get more than 9000 visits a month for $5000 by setting up a pay per click advertising campaign with one or more of the search engines.
If you've never done it before some of that $5000 might go towards hiring a company to set up and manage things, but even then I think you'd get more traffic.
You'd also get more targeted traffic which should lead to more sales.

You guys are misreading that post.
It's $5000 a month for 9000 clicks per year (750 per month).

I did misread that. So it's $6.67 per click. I don't know what industry you're in, but I'm going to suggest you'd be getting ripped off for that price. You can get those 750 visits for a lot less than $5000 a month.

I've got a deal for you! Pay me $5000 per month and I'll only charge $6.50 per click

Thank you for your responses, I was afraid I was just be stingy, with someone else's money, lol! With my own site I receive more clicks per month than 750 and have never paid anyone and I do not spam. I do have some odd ball listings that some random search engine picked up listing me under pill. Aside from that they are all good hits. The client is paying me to overhaul his site and handle the editing, so the suggestion to hire RedFly may be passed on. A lot of people suggest to avoid using Adwords due to so many web users randomly clicking on things. I conducted a poll several months ago asking users which search engine they used. All but one response used Google, the other one used Ask.com if you were curious what the other one was. Would I be out of line by just attempting to handle it myself without having so many years of experience? I just wanted to scream at him dont waste that kind of money, lol.

It means you could pay people to put out Anchor text for you with the proper budget, in the correct way. That is all I was saying.

Seriously, dude, you gotta stop listening to Digital Pointless. They've got your head shoved so far up your *** it would take a pound of butter to dislodge it.
Do you not think that a $5000 per month campaign full of mindless idiots going around sticking links on other people's sites with identical anchor text would leave a distinct footprint? Think about that. Seriously. That's just asinine.
By the way, has anyone else noticed that since Vasity started posting, Shannon stopped with his eerily similar posts? I'm just sayin', is all.

Strangely enough I was about to say exactly the same thing.

I noticed that too, and gave it enough thought to realize they're not the same person. Shannon knows his spam from a hole in the ground, basically enough to be an effective spammer. Varsity is proud to have "showed him how to anchor text." And you can tell that's not an actual quote 'cause there's no IM speak.

Yes for one it's Vasity.
Very simple.
Secondly, I didn't know I should be writing, as an english class or anything. Or that I should be using full or complete scentences when speaking with everyone. I was proud I helped this person find out what a anchor text is. But I have been nothing but insulted/red rep'ed, for almost anything, I have said. But you know what It's all good..I don't need talkupation to speak here. And I don't need to care what everyone thinks about me, I don't mind helping other people, something I RARELY SEE ANY OF YOU OTHER PEOPLE DO. Often you tell people they are wrong, OR Come UP with some unique responce that DOESN'T HELP ANYONE.
But that's cool sauce. Everyone is different... I guess.

Hmmm.... sounds an awful lot like an insult to me. It brings to mind a noble saying I scraped from another web site (of course):
"Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and then they beat you with experience."

My pineapple, sea dwelling friend I really want to give you some TP for that quote, but alas I need to spread the love around a little more. I hope you accept IOUs

Umm...did I miss something? How exactly did you do this?
Ok everyone here remember Brandy? (PC Catastrophe). I believe there's still a question out on the table.
Brandy I don't think you'd be out of line handling the pay per click campaign yourself, but I would try to do a little research about how to go about doing it first. I think there's a lot more to PPC than people realize and a little time learning up front will go a long way in creating a more successful and profitable campaign.
There's definitely an expertise that goes along with PPC, just as there is one that goes along with SEO, but you can certainly learn enough to run a profitable campaign that's more successful than the one you mention in your original post.
Spend a little time learning the basics and then you can decide if you're up for the task (I think you are) or would prefer hiring out.

Okay, Vasity. You want the answer? You want a clear explanation?
(Shameless but relevant self-promo): Here it is. That's Brandy's question, which is the reason I thanked her...it's actually a common telephone company trick. The reason I didn't repeat it is because it was the most recent post in my blog at the time and because I didn't want to promote myself for this.
But...there's the answer. Clear as rain.

I would agree, John, except 'ritin' styles can easily be changed. Just ask my urban alter-ego, keepin' it real Sesame Street styalz.
