Hi
I have a website, which sells some product. I thought to have lots of domain name(for the same site content) to target different keywords so that my site can get good ranking in search engine queries.
I have 10 domains and all are successfully runninng for the last 1.5 years.
Can you please suggest me is it leagal to run more than 1 domains for the same site content?
If search engines find it or track it... will they ban my site?
I also have one more website having 2 domains(same site content)
As all the domains are running for last 1.5 years and give me good traffic, I can not remove them. Is there any way, i can solve this problem?
I will realy appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks,
Ashish

Using multiple domains to re-direct visitors to a single site with content is a form of spamdexing; these are sometimes referred to as "mirror sites". This definitely goes against most search engine guidelines (i.e. just waiting to be blacklisted).

I suggest you develop an SEO friendly strategy to get rid of the other pages and focus on making your main site stand alone.

Use 301 redirects to point all the other hostnames to one set of content

Thanks for replying, but what strategy should i use. As i get good traffic from all of my sites. Today i understand that my site might be banned in search engine, but when i did this; i was not aware of this thing.
Is there any way other than removing all the less active sites (Except my main site)?
can i change some of the content of my less active sites, in this way the content of all the sites will not be same but they will perform same work and all will work for me only?

Chrishurst gave you the perfect solution. For more info on 301 redirects try this.

You mean i shall redirect all my less active sites to my main site... right?
Will that solve my problem, because right now i have 10 domains pointing to same site content?
will search engine allow this?

Thanks,
Ashish

You have exactly right Ashish. Do a permanent redirect of all the other domains to your main information site. This will eliminate the risk of being banned by major SE's. You place a 301 permanent redirect into your .htaccess file, located in the root directory of your site. Something similar to:

Redirect 301 / http:// www. put your domain here .com

Mirrors aren't a bad thing in and of themselves; a lot of them are set up for overworked servers to keep the strain down. Of course that's less and less of a problem lately...

You can have as many domains as you'd like pointing to the same content, but you should only expose one of them to the search engines. You could use a robots.txt files on all but the most popular site to make them invisible, or you can use .htaccess, or some other method, to send 301 permenant redirect messages down pointing to the main site.

Hey Forrest... you or someone else must help the ignorant (namely me). Don't some of the major engines simply ignore the robots.txt file and spider the site anyway? Could this put a site structure such as is mentioned in this thread at risk for a ban?

I've heard they do; mine is empty, so I can't say from experience. But they shouldn't, and really can't punish people for nibbling on the fruit of the forbidden tree.

.htaccess is the better method in some ways, but it can be desirable to not have the address bar change due to a redirect ( landscapephoto.us redirects to forrestcroce.com, but doesn't need to for the landscapes ), and the .htaccess file is parsed before every request, so it's good not to have too much in there,.
